Life & Work with Matt Smith of Doylestown, OH

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Smith.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I wrote a children’s book back in 2019 called “I Love Blue Macaroons”. In 2022, our daughter began taking lessons at the local theater company that just opened in our small town. About a year later, the owner decided to go back to college, so my wife and I decided to take over the space. The goal was to change the name, expand the scope and become more of a performance arts hub, focusing on not only stage productions, but live talent performances that would include music, comedy, improv, and more. The unique name of the theater comes from the title of the children’s book. That’s how Blue Macaroon Theater Company was born just over three years ago.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Art imitates life and there is always risks and bumps in the road. We’ve been lucky so far to have overcome a few minor struggles. It’s all part of the growing process.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Our main focus at Blue Macaroon Theater is to provide a safe space and atmosphere where artists and performers at any level can shine. One of my jobs as the owner and promoter is to find the find the right mix of shows with the right people and performers. All of those work hand in hand, and it always shows in every performance.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
As a business, it’s obvious what success is measured by. As an artist or as the owner of an ArtSpace, it’s measured by the smiles on people’s faces. We also teach music & theatre at the Blue Macaroon. Watching the growth of our students is certainly a huge measure of success as well.
