Life & Work with Mary Armstrong

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Armstrong.

Hi Mary, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my career as an elementary special education teacher- I always knew that I wanted to work with kids. After the birth of our first child, my love for photography was born. I loved documenting my daughter and all those small details that change so quickly.

After our second daughter came along, photography evolved as more than a hobby. Friends were asking me to take photos of their children and soon a business was started. Fast forward many classes and sessions later, I’m proud to have a busy studio on the Medina square that specializes in baby photography.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a business owner has been a steep learning curve for me. There is a huge difference from being a teacher to being a small business owner.

I really had no idea how to run a business when I first started. There was a lot of mistakes, and learning from those mistakes. Running a business has taken a lot of personal growth. I’ve learned to set boundaries, gain confidence, and work with all types of people and businesses. I’ve also gained a lot of life long friends.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in bump to baby photography (maternity, newborn, first birthday). I’m proud to have a full service studio that makes the process from start to finish as easy as possible. We take care of wardrobe, hair and makeup, as well as finished artwork (wall art, albums, etc) that will become family heirlooms for year to come.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I wish someone would have told me take business classes. Running a photography business well is just as important as the photography itself.
