Today we’d like to introduce you to Mambo Elizabeth Ruth.
Mambo, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a Haitian Vodou Mambo Sou Pwen, Witch, Rootworker, and Diviner who trained with owners of The Vodou Store for two years. I also initiated as a Mambo Sou Pwen in Haiti in 2018.
In 2015, I relocated to central Ohio after spending my adult life as a resident of Chicago. I was raised by my maternal grandparents in a small town in northeastern Ohio. My grandmother was heavily interested in astrology, UFOs, the Occult, and she communicated with the dead. When I was growing up, Gede (Vodou spirits of the Dead) always visited members of my family right before someone died. The spirits of my Ancestors were also frequent visitors in my home, and they continue to visit me to this day. Their reemergence in my life is why I began my training in the occult.
I also spent vacations in my youth with my paternal grandmother and family in rural Alabama. There, I learned about the spirituality, folk magic, superstitions, and customs of the American south.
I opened my online store, Big Liz Conjure (https://biglizconjure.com) in 2013, and I opened my first brick-and-mortar store, Erzulie’s Conjure Garden, in Reynoldsburg in 2019. In 2022, I went back to simply using Big Liz Conjure, and my new location in Columbus, Ohio, is named as such.
I offer my spiritual products and services to clients domestically and internationally to assist them with spiritual issues using divination and Hoodoo/Conjure. I perform Playing Card, Tarot, Lenormand, and Candle Divination services. I also teach magical courses and provide mentorship through her website and store. I take pride in selling high-quality spiritual products to my clientele to use in their practices.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Nothing worth anything is easy to obtain. The saying, “easy come, easy go,” is a lesson for so many of us. The pandemic has brought challenges nobody saw coming. There are always challenges with any small business. I have to say that I am grateful for the growth of my business and that we are still here to serve the community. There are struggles that shouldn’t take place. I’ve been the victim of a fraudulent spiritual leader, under intense scrutiny by members of the spiritual community as I distanced myself from them, and just living human life in general creates obstacles and challenges. What I love about what I do is that it is designed for us to overcome obstacles and achieve things in ways we never even dreamed we could.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am most proud of my education component of my business. I help people to understand what magic is and how it can change their lives. I also encourage people to learn these practices for themselves so that they can see the results and not fall upon someone to help them that may not. I’m also proud that I am not the only teacher in my organization. I have a fast array of instructors who have different magical experience to help people find out what is the best spiritual practice for them.
I am also known for my handmade items. In a world where everything is commercialized, my clients use my services, buy my products, and take my classes because they know I approach my work from the traditions that birthed them. They know that I have spent years researching the effectiveness of the things I sell them. I live this life. I am not simply out here to make a buck.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Sadly, at a time when I thought we would be caring about each other the most, I noticed that so many people really just looked out for themselves. And sometimes, they don’t even look out for themselves. I’ve learned that we are in a very depressed state spiritually in this world.
My gratefulness for life simply intensified. There are so many things that I no longer take for granted. I’ve watched so many people get sick and die. It has been a very painful time for so many people. I’ve always been grateful for each day and for the chance to really make my mark in this world. The COVID-19 crisis simply intensified that. Life is so precious. And we need to learn the tools to make it the best for us and the people we love.
I already knew it takes courage it took to get through this human iteration. I just didn’t realize how much. I’ve really had to pull deep into myself to keep my family and business going in a positive direction.
