Life & Work with Maliyah Clark of Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maliyah Clark.

Hi Maliyah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in a very supportive family. They believed my love for the arts was something important to foster. This continued support led me to attend magnet art schools for middle and high school. This pursuit in art education resulted in attending art school and receiving an internship with the Whitney Museum of American Art. All this support was foundational in pursuing my career as an artist.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve struggled constantly with imposter syndrome. I create art focused on fantasy and people of color. A genre of art that is dominated by Eurocentric design and white artists. This makes me feel like I make artwork that people don’t want to see. Artwork that doesn’t belong next to these other Eurocentric designs. I often have to remind myself that I’m creating art that I wanted to see. A combination of genre, style, and subject that is difficult to find in one artwork. I believe that other people would like to see this kind of work too.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m known for my vibrant and whimsical illustrations. I utilize my illustrations for murals, greeting cards, and stickers. I pursue any format that can make my work accessible to others.

What were you like growing up?
As a child, I was quite shy. I often kept to myself. Spending most of my time with my twin sister. My tendency to keep to myself fueled my wild imagination. I spent my time drawing and creating worlds with unique characters.
