Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie McConnell.
Katie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Photography has always been a passion of mine—I was always that friend with a camera in hand, capturing everything from everyday moments to big milestones. During COVID, I had the time and space to really dive in, and that’s when I realized I could turn this hobby into something more. Now, five years later, I’m proud to call myself a professional photographer.
This journey has introduced me to some of the most incredible people, many of whom have become dear friends. It’s been such a rewarding ride, full of learning, growth, and unforgettable experiences. I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without the guidance and support of Carrie O’Brien and Larry Miller. They’ve been incredible mentors and teachers, and I’m so grateful for everything they’ve shared with me.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest challenges in becoming a professional photographer wasn’t actually taking the photos—that part came naturally. It was figuring out the business side of photography that pushed me the most. Learning how to price my work, understanding my own worth, setting boundaries, delivering galleries, managing workflows, contracts, taxes—all the behind-the-scenes stuff no one tells you about—was completely new territory for me.
At first, it felt overwhelming. There were so many moving parts to figure out, and I made my fair share of mistakes along the way. But with a lot of guidance, support, and trial and error, I slowly found my rhythm. It’s still a learning process, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come and how much I’ve grown—not just as a photographer, but as a business owner.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m the owner of Smile Always Photography and have been a professional photographer for just over five years. I specialize in wedding and couples photography, family sessions, and portraiture—including professional headshots, senior photos, and creative styled shoots. At the end of the day, it’s all about bringing each client’s unique vision to life.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the way I make people feel during and after a session. I’ve heard so many people say, “I hate the way I look in photos,” and I love being the one to change that narrative. There’s nothing more fulfilling than hearing, “I can’t believe I look this good!” That confidence boost, that moment of joy—that’s what I live for.
I’m known for my vibrant, colorful style and a bubbly, positive energy that I bring to every shoot. My motto in life and in business is simple: Smile Always. That outlook not only shows up in my personality, but also in the way I shoot, edit, and connect with the people I photograph.
More than just taking pretty pictures, I aim to create a fun, meaningful experience—one where people feel comfortable, seen, and celebrated.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Starting your own business is one of the biggest risks you can take. Dreaming up ideas, creating a vision board, setting goals—that’s the fun part. But actually executing that vision? That’s where the real leap of faith comes in. You’re putting your time, energy, and heart into something with no guarantees, hoping all the pieces come together to build something beautiful.
When I decided to go all in with Smile Always Photography, I quit my 9–5 job and ran full speed toward the unknown. It was terrifying. And ironically, I left a traditional job just to end up working weekends, odd hours during the week, and editing at all hours of the night. But the truth is, I wouldn’t change a thing.
This business has given me the freedom to do what I love every single day. I get to create, connect, and build something that feels deeply meaningful. And I absolutely couldn’t have done it without the support of my husband. He’s been by my side through the highs, the lows, and the messy middle—cheering me on the whole way, even when things got tough.
Taking the risk was scary—but it’s also been one of the most rewarding decisions of my life.
