Life & Work with Jae Esquire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jae Esquire.

Jae Esquire

Hi Jae, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been a BIG music lover from maybe like 3/4. I remember I had a tank of fish, and I named them all Bob Marley because I liked Bob Marley, lol. Sounds and progressions have always done something for my soul and curiosity. “What instrument is making that sound? What notes are they playing?”. It like science of sound, so I’ve always been a student of the art. I taught myself how to play piano when I was like 10/11. My grandmother bought me a Casio LK-100 from Sears, and I QUICKLY discovered I could play melodies by ear. I learned the shapes of chords at that time, too, but didn’t know how to apply the knowledge. When I was in high school, I had a music teacher who had been at ALL my previous schools before (elementary and middle); I finally decided to take him up on his offer to teach me piano. My knowledge base helped him teach me how to figure out entire songs by listening. So now, I had the melody AND chords, so I was unstoppable at 16 lol. My keyboard, me, my radio/CD player with Alicia Keys’ Unplugged used to have LONG sessions lol. I also started dabbling into digital production with Sony Acid Pro and simple sequencing.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
HELL, NO lol. Because I’m the only musical person in my family, I think I was misunderstood in some regard. I joined the marching band my senior year, and it was not received well in my household, but I did it anyway. Even through college/schooling, it took a minute for me to find my stride in what I was doing, but the road there, I really had to be there for myself. Some people didn’t (still don’t) understand what it really takes to follow your dreams, and you have to be ok with that. If it’s your best friend or your mom, sometimes people’s understanding can only go so far. Keep your vision, and the support around you, especially from people who enjoy your journey, will be all that you need.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I used to get in trouble for doing too many things lol. Ironically, doing all things has served me well lol. I’m a rapper, producer, composer, pianist, radio personality, voice-over artist, improv comedian/actress, and DJ. I can do most of these things pretty top-level and always have. The rapper Jae Esquire has had to take a back seat for the last couple years so the radio personality and DJ could flourish. Rapping and performing is where it all began professionally for me, so I think it’s time to revel in some of the rapper Jae Esquire for a couple years. Most people in my geographic area think I’m only a DJ or I only work on the radio, but I have 6 albums, a few singles, and some funny content that spans about 10 years. So, it’s always fun when people “discover” that I do something “new.”

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I was born in Wiesbaden, West Germany; I was raised in a single-father household (my Gram was there too for support).
