Life & Work with Desiree Wright of Cincinnati Ohio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree Wright

Hi Desiree, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Becoming a makeup artist was never really “my plan” per say. I was 22 years old when I graduated college with my degree in criminal justice. After that, I still didn’t really know what I wanted to do. I never used that degree. I landed my first “big girl” job a few months after graduating with a bank in the mortgage department. I worked in that field with different companies for a few years. By the time I turned 25 I started to reevaluate my life , I began to ask myself what is it that I wanted to do and what is it that I actually liked doing. Something about the routine of doing the same thing over and over and not really enjoying it got to me , I wanted to find true purpose.

I always loved watching YouTube videos , the process it took to get ready , and the transformations with hair and makeup. I started practicing makeup on myself and really enjoyed it, it became therapeutic for me. I would post my makeup looks on Facebook and Instagram just for fun , surprisingly I got really good feedback. Early on , people really loved my work. I was so excited and shocked because I was just learning. I would have people ask me to do theirs but I wasn’t confident enough to take on that role of being called a “makeup artist” just yet. I didn’t touch anyone else’s face until I mastered my own, which took about a year and a half. After that, I started taking clients. I had a few false starts , I would start and stop often until one day I decided I wanted to actually get serious about my craft. And from that, I began to take clients regularly. I was still working my corporate job in the mortgage field Monday – Friday, and Saturday and Sunday’s I would take clients doing makeup. I didn’t have a booking site , they would have to email me to get an appointment. Ultimately, I was working 7 days a week. I would get asked to do makeup on days I worked my corporate job, and I remember I always had to turn potential clients down because of it.

The saying “do it scared” is so real. I was so comfortable working my corporate job, and comfortable knowing that I had a paycheck coming in every two weeks no matter what. The feeling of being unsure on when and how often I would make money was the scariest thing for me.

2020, Covid came about and changed a lot of things for many people, good and bad. Another thing it brought out was entrepreneurs. People were getting layed off which called for them to start businesses and get creative. I was one of those people that took this opportunity to pursue my career full time. As I go back down memory lane telling parts of my journey, I still can’t believe how far I’ve come sometimes. I am so happy and grateful I had this opportunity to do so. It has not been easy by far , but my faith hasn’t let me down yet!

2025 , will place me at 5 years of being an entrepreneur, and I thank God and my clients each chance I get for this experience. For some reason, I still feel like I’m just getting started !

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The beauty industry is forever evolving. But it isn’t always peaches and cream, and when people get in the field they realize that fast. It’s a constant hustle , it’s a constant grind and without discipline and dedication you will sink fast . When it comes to the upkeep of maintenance for women and their beauty, makeup is not in a two week rotation like you’d see from hair , nails , lashes. In fact it’s the least needed service . It is a luxury service , so with that you have to grind 10x harder compared to someone else in those fields. But when you truly love what you do, it’s always worth it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a professional makeup artist that was featured on channel 19 news twice, to demonstrate my work. I specialize in natural full glam makeup applications, bridal and special events. I create the kind of art where you still look like yourself, just the elevated version . I’m known for my seamless makeup looks, and the consistency of my work displayed. My esthetic is timeless , clean, and classy and I exclude confidence from myself on to my clients . My personality is pure and magnetic , and I give an experience. I believe that’s what sets me apart.
