Life & Work with Darrien Mccoy of Anderson/Mt Washington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darrien Mccoy.

Darrien, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m a photographer with a background in communications and broadcasting, which naturally sharpened my eye for following subjects and framing stories. Throughout college, I captured sporting events, and after graduating, I continued freelancing while searching for a camera that felt “different” from standard production setups.

At first, I just wanted to document family gatherings, but I got thrown into the fire when my sister couldn’t find a wedding photographer. I stepped in with my Sony a6000 kit (16-50 and 55-210 lenses), and no spoiler here….they weren’t great lol, but that moment sparked my journey into photography. Since then, I’ve been hooked on capturing moments people can look back on and truly feel again, and it’s become one of the most rewarding parts of what I get to do.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been smooth at all. Maybe I’m not connected with the right groups but I don’t feel like the community here in Cincinnati is very supportive. I’ve self taught myself everything I know, but the feedback I get from clients makes it worthwhile!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a wedding and portrait photographer that has a true to life but cinematic style. I keep colors natural while adding a small nostalgic feel to my photos. My most proud moments are feedback that I get from clients. All of my clients I treat like family. We are locked in once we work together. Lastly, nothing beats seeing a client use your photo that you took of them as their profile picture.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I like to listen to a verity of podcasts such as
Locked on Bengals, Brilliant idiots, the vendor table and shoot your shot to name a few.
I’m also listening to Dave Ramsey a lot lately, because I’m interested in investing my money and building wealth.
