Life & Work with Danielle Herrera

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Herrera.

Hi Danielle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been interested in art and tried to pursue it after high school but was rejected. I gave up and years later decided to try and create a portrait of my father out of his Army uniform (he passed away when I was 8). This started my path of doing memorial art.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been up and down… I’ve have two brain tumors in the past 9 years and must maintain maintenance on that and other health issues. I depend on my art as a job and love it; however, it’s unpredictable. I’m sure every artist feels this way

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work with mixed media. Things such as dryer lint, candy wrappers, old clothes, even hair… anything I can find and give it new life. I work with a lot of people who are morning and grieving over lost loved ones, and I find it an honor to help along them with the process. I think what sets me apart is I’m willing to work with anything a person may have to include in a custom order… I’ve even used dentures and an old hotdog

What does success mean to you?
I define success by the joy you feel and the satisfaction others have from my art
