Today we’d like to introduce you to Cory Holliday.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have been drawing all my life, but about 10 years ago, I started to try and sell art as a side job. I would set up at local flea markets and craft shows. A local friend of mine worked at Wizard World; he would get me in those shows that were local because, at the time, I was really nervous about showing my work.
It was a blessing and a curse; sure, I got free tables, but the market was very oversaturated with people trying the same things. It put me in a bad mindset. I didn’t think I had it to go any further. Then another friend of mine, Larry, who I hadn’t talked to in years, convinced me to try horror conventions. This helped me out immensely and gave me the confidence needed to travel longer distances. The horror crowd was much more accepting of my art, but it also helped me understand how to accommodate the comic crowd as well. Today, I have over 170 pieces to take to shows.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The hardest thing was trying to get out of my own headspace. I setup so many obstacles for myself that just never needed to be there.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Horror art, comic book mashups, pop culture-referenced art, dark humor; the piece I’m most proud of is my Pretty Woman/Texas Chainsaw poster
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Never stopping. In my earlier days I would come home from work and send about 3 hours a day working on pieces. I really wanted to do it for a living.
