Today we’d like to introduce you to Carla Hadfield.  

Hi Carla, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
After losing my husband in December of 2012 I lost myself for many years. Once I became strong enough, the concept for Decades Rock N Pop began! I had a long background in events and entertainment. I grew up watching my grandparents put on events and was always eager to assist. I went to college for theater and dance, eventually landing contracts at both Disney and Universal Studios. The event and performance industry has been a part of my life for over 30 years. I absolutely love themed events, and especially love music. I knew music and events made me most happy. I started planning Decades Rock N Pop during the fall of 2017. We are an MTV-era music and pop culture boutique housed out of a fully themed, interactive 1969 vintage Airstream. I started this business on pennies after being a victim of financial fraud. I repurposed my Airstream to become an interactive themed music boutique, and after every show, I added another art project. The first six months I would even bungee cord my first little vinyl sign to the side of the trailer! I still have that little sign that we started out with and have come such a long way! My airstream also is nicknamed Stevie, after two of my idols; Stevie Nicks and Steven Tyler. It’s been four years now and I’m so grateful we survived the shutdown of 2020 and many other obstacles! I’m most proud that we’re becoming recognizable and have met so many wonderful people while building this business. It truly makes my heart happy that they have such a fun, nostalgic experience in my shop! 

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road though. The pandemic was devastating for us. I absolutely love what I do and to not be able to what I love was so difficult. On top of that, we have always been primarily self-funded. It’s been a rocky road. Combined with being a widowed single mom, and a victim of financial fraud the year I opened, the pandemic and a cancer scare in 2021. I have always found a way to make thing work though, simply because my small business means so much to me. 

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have had a strong connection to the arts for many years. Having gone to school for theatre and dance at NKU, I had a wonderful start! I was a dancer at many amusement parks, from Kings Island locally all the way to Disney World and Universal Studios. I’ve been a magic assistant to many, assisting in large stage illusions. Being immersed in so many creative environments has made what I do now incredibly exciting as well. We are most well-known for our unique and custom inventory, as well as setting up some fantastic themed private events! I can theme anything in a fast and consistent timeframe and love doing it! Our current music-themed inventory spans the 1960s through the 1990s and is all handmade. We use a sublimation printing process, making everything we made incredibly soft and wearable. The airstream is completely themed and interactive as well! It truly a one-of-a-kind experience. I’m most proud of our growth through so many years of challenges, and definitely proud that I have created such a one of kind, nostalgic environment. 

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I have most definitely had some bad luck which was no fault of my own during the start of Decades. Because I was a victim of financial fraud, I opened 5 months late with barely anything to start with. This was devastating and to understand more, watch The Rise and Fall of LuLaRoe on Discovery Plus. It had a huge impact on my current business. I have also been a guest multiple podcast episodes that chronicle my journey with that the last four years. Fighting something like that while building a business takes an incredible toll on someone.
