Life & Work with Brittany Howard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Howard.

Hi Brittany, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a freelance makeup artist: specializing in dramatic glams and soft glams.

I’ve always been known for my creative eye makeup. I feel like eye makeup is my pride and joy. It’s the first part of the artistry that I mastered. The more creative the better. If I could fit every color on my eyelids, I would. It’s something about the bold, bright looks that take my breath away.

Honestly, I had no idea I would ever get into makeup or even being a makeup artist. I’ve always been interested in investigations so in college I majored in Criminal Justice. During my freshman year at the University of Cincinnati, I went through several “phases” of obsession. I would find myself being obsessed with shoes, purses, and then I became obsessed with makeup. I began to buy eyeshadow, and I would apply it every morning before class, but once I stepped foot on campus all my hard work would disappear and I didn’t understand why. So, I thought well let me pack on more! That way it’ll stay on. But again, it would disappear. I had to figure out why. So, I thought, let me google it. Then boom, eyeshadow primer. It’s almost like you can never learn enough about it. Just when you think you have an area perfected, the beauty industry hits you with a new trend. I love makeup because it never gets old. It’s always something new and excited. Something will always spark my interest in this industry, and it’s the best career I’ve ever found myself in.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! I’d be lying if I said it has. I’ve had times where I gave up and times where I was so booked that my body wanted to call it quits. But I’m so grateful because it’s so many people I’ve been able to share this gift with.

Seasons will come when you aren’t booked and seasons will come when you’re overbooked. You have to be able to adjust and kick into that creativity so you never lose that drive, just that passion, the love of the art.

I never thought I would hear myself saying this, but it’s true. I almost gave up on my gift, my dream, and you can’t. There’s so many people who are waiting for your to awaken; it’ll be selfish to give up.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
A few things to know about my work is that I like to have a very clean application meaning I want create a skin like finish for every person that sit in my chair. My focus going forward is creating editorial looks

What I am most proud of is my collaboration with my good friend Sean Dustin, who invited me to be the key makeup artist for my first magazine feature in Harpers Bazaar Vietnam. I remember it like it was yesterday. I cried my eyes out because who would have ever guessed that a girl who didn’t know what eyeliner was would be a published makeup artist for a huge name as Harper’s Bazaar.

This is what sets me apart from others. I am a published makeup artist. I’ve been published inside magazines and made the cover of Beyondall Magazine. I know this is just the beginning of many.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice to those who are starting out is learn about skincare. Get familiar with ingredients. Learn the color wheel.

It’s so important. Your client will love you for this. You will avoid so many mistakes. I learned the hard way because no one told me. Don’t just go with the trends; learn the proper way of the arts and adjust accordingly.
