Life & Work with Breanna Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Breanna Johnson.

Hi Breanna, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started Melanin Mamaa Boutique to provide accessories on a budget to people who may not be able to afford luxurious accessories or just people who like a deal. I have always loved helping people and four years after starting the boutique The Lady Lounge was born. Which is the first of its kind allowing for safe spaces for women to make healthy friendships with a heavy focus in on mental health,

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say it’s been an interesting road. When it came to the boutique, I wanted to make it a completely different experience to shop. I went through a lot of rebrands because it just didn’t fit what I wanted. I have been told by my mentor to change my name cause it will deter customers from shopping because of the name. I received a lot of good advice but also a whole lot of bad advice being a new growing business you want the right people around you. I had to find my own voice in it all.

Now with The Lady Lounge I sadly noticed my whole entire brand being copied and pasted on competitors branding. Honestly it hurt a lot because being a black owned brand lots of things like growing a business can sometimes be harder for us. I kept pushing because I know if other brands are trying to steal my whole concept, I must have a good thing.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Melanin Mama Boutique is known for her unique bold accessories. The best thing about her is you may look and say I can’t afford them. The thing is hunny when you see that price it’s an easy let me grab these and three more pieces!

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was always styled up in junior high and high school I was known for being very well dressed. In high school and in college. Every year in my sorority I always received the best dressed award.

I honestly as a young child wanted to have the barrettes all throughout my hair one day. I believe I put about 6 of those per ponytail and I had 4 ponytails. I was a super decorated kid that day. I feel I also to this day have always just been helpful and just want to make people happy.
