Natasha Keel shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Natasha, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Photography. I’ve been taking an online course for food photography for the last year. It’s been really frustrating but also so much fun to learn, grow and express myself creatively.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a self taught baker and business owner, I own a bakery / cafe. I started it out of my house 10 years ago. I’ve grown it from a strictly cake pop business out of my little kitchen to a full service scratch made, bakery and cafe. We serve breakfast, lunch, coffee, desserts and custom cake orders.
I have an amazing partner and team of women that work there. We’re always working to create new items while keeping the favorites. I think we’ve created an atmosphere that is fun and friendly.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My mom. Not only did I watch her work and put herself through college after her and my dad divorced. I also saw her do what she loved, as a teacher she helped so many people. I also saw her take on creative side hustles, gardening, caregiving, organizing. She’s never afraid to get dirty and get the job done.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You don’t have to figure it all out now. Keep doing the next right thing and everything will work out. Trust God and trust the process. You are so much stronger than you imagined.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I think there are so many that think there’s only one way to do things. To make a cake you must follow this recipe exactly, etc. I believed that when I started baking too. Yes, baking is a science that requires certain ingredients, but there’s so much room for your own spin and your own method. Make the recipe your own, decorate the cake the way you want, combine the flavors you want to try.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I would love to say yes, buuuut that’s a hard one. When I’m unsure of myself or feeling defeated, a little praise and encouragement from others can go along way. I’m my biggest critic.
