Inspiring Conversations with Talicia and Jairus McNealy of Victory Medical Alliance, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Talicia and Jairus McNealy.

Hi Talicia and Jairus McNealy, thanks for joining us today. Can you briefly walk us through your story, how you started, and how you got to where you are today? You can include as little or as much detail as you like.
Victory Medical Alliance has truly been years in the making. With a professional background as both a medical device and pharmaceutical sales representative, I had the opportunity to work across many different areas of the hospital system. But after facing multiple layoffs and constant changes to compensation structures, I reached a major point of frustration in my career. I knew I wanted to build something of my own — a business rooted in healthcare where I could have greater control, stability, and long-term impact.

While working for a company that was launching a new buy-and-bill drug that required insurance processing, I found myself collaborating closely with a billing coordinator at one of the practices I called on. In that moment, something just dropped in my spirit — a spark. I thought to myself, “I wonder if there are any business opportunities in medical billing?” That evening, I went home and started researching. I Googled “medical billing businesses” and “medical billing companies,” and sure enough, a few companies came up that offered software and business opportunity models.

I reached out to representatives and began gathering information — learning about the industry, the market, and everything in between. I was excited because I already knew this space. I understood the size and complexity of the healthcare industry. I started to ask myself: What if I actually went out on my own? Could this really be possible? And from that point forward, the journey officially began.

I didn’t know exactly where to start when it came to launching a business, but I knew there were resources out there — and one of the most valuable was SCORE.org. I began attending their webinars and exploring the wealth of tools they offered for aspiring entrepreneurs — from how to start a business and form your legal structure, to how to actually run it successfully. That research phase really kicked off in December 2022, and that’s when I truly started laying the foundation for what would become Victory Medical Alliance.

During that same period, life threw us some serious personal and family challenges — and the timing simply wasn’t right to move forward. But once those obstacles cleared, everything shifted. In December 2022, I experienced what I would call an unfair layoff — or unfair firing, depending on how you look at it. But in that moment, I knew one thing for sure: I couldn’t go back to corporate. That door had closed. And just two months later, in February 2023, we officially launched Victory Medical Alliance.

Now, we’re heading into our third year in business, and we’ve experienced tremendous growth in that time. We serve double-digit providers across multiple states and specialties, and we’re currently building out three core divisions with the goal of scaling into a multi-million-dollar company over the next three years. It’s been an incredible journey — one that started with a leap of faith and continues to be fueled by purpose and perseverance.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely, there were challenges — the road has not been smooth.
One of the biggest hurdles we faced early on was simply learning the industry from the ground up. Although we had both worked in healthcare, we had never done medical billing specifically. So there was a steep learning curve — understanding the nuances of billing processes, payer requirements, coding, claim workflows, and everything in between. Learning how to actually bill was a major hurdle, and we had to overcome it quickly in order to serve clients with confidence.

We immersed ourselves in training — not only on the technical side of billing, but also on the business side: how to generate leads, how to find providers who were looking for the services we offered, and how to approach them in a meaningful and professional way. We also had to learn how to communicate the value of what we do — how to assess a provider’s needs, explain our process clearly, and confidently walk them through how we could help. Learning how to close that first deal was just as important as learning how to submit the first claim.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Victory Medical Alliance, LLC?

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Networking has absolutely been a key part of our growth, especially in the short time we’ve been operating.
One piece of advice I always share is to tap into your local small business ecosystem. That has made all the difference for us. We’ve been fortunate to be in a region with a strong support network for small businesses from accelerators and chambers of commerce to networking events and mentorship programs.

Another important strategy is to start with the network you already have. Let people in your circle — friends, family, past classmates, former colleagues — know what you’re doing. We’ve made a point to share our journey and services with those we know, and it’s led to a surprising number of referrals. Don’t underestimate the power of word-of-mouth. It’s still one of the most effective and authentic marketing tools out there. Simply making others aware of your business can help you reach new clients and build meaningful connections.
