Inspiring Conversations with Nikki Jones of Lived In Luxury Hair

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Jones

Hi Nikki, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Nikki, I’m the owner of Lived In Luxury Hair, in Lebanon Ohio. I’m 28 years old. I feel very fortunate to have gotten so far since starting in the hair business, in August of 2021. I began my journey at Paul Mitchell The School in Sharonville, Ohio. As I worked through my required 1500 hours, I learned the basics of hairdressing. More importantly I learned everything needed to pass my state board test to achieve my cosmetology license.
After I graduated from Paul Mitchell in July 2022, I started immediately at my first salon! I received my cosmetology license on August 4th, 2022. I then went through a 6 month apprenticeship, learning more and perfecting my craft. After 6 months I worked my way behind the chair full time, and spent over two years building my books. As well as taking classes to ensure my knowledge stays up to date on new trends, and ways of doing things. I was fortunate enough to go to multiple Goldwell Classes! One in Nashville, and one in New York! After over two years at the salon I was currently at, life pushed me to take a risk.
In September of 2024, I decided to rent a suite which allows me to run my own business. At Lived In Luxury Hair, I’m located inside The Copper Bow.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road wasn’t smooth, but for me seeing the day to day, and month to month progress makes all the hard days worth it. I knew starting my own business in a new area would be challenging for me. However, I’ve had many new guest, and guest who followed me from my old salon. This made my transition possible, and more smooth. I’m still currently building my clientele, but I see progress every month!

As you know, we’re big fans of Lived In Luxury Hair. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?

I offer a variety of services including highlights, balayage/foiliage, all over color, root touch ups, glazes, conditioning/scalp/smoothing treatments, women’s haircuts, and more. I have a 10$ off new guest offer as well.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
After a rough end at my old salon, I decided to take a risk to start my own business. This was a scary decision not knowing the future. I went from working at a commission salon where I only received 40% of my services + tips, where I didn’t have to pay a weekly rent. Or have to pay for product, and insurance, and all the things I now have to pay for. I now receive 100% of my services. Except, now I have to take my own taxes out, pay for product, and rent, insurance, and more. However, I wanted to create something that was mine, something that I could make my own, and regardless if I started at a new salon or created my own business I have to build my entire clientele over again. Now, I’m getting more and more guest on my books. I’m seeing the growth, and it’s all mine. It makes the risk so much more worth it. Confidence is key, and word of mouth/ social media has helped so much.
