Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Kahook.
Hi Mike, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I never planned on being in the cigar business.
In 2008, after my father passed, I was 17 years old and suddenly responsible for a shop I knew nothing about. No roadmap, no experience—just pressure and a choice: figure it out or lose it.
So I stayed. I learned. I made mistakes, adjusted, and kept going.
Eighteen years later, that same shop is still here—only now it’s twice the size, filled with a community, not just customers. And the biggest full-circle moment? I didn’t just keep the doors open…I bought the building.
What started as something I was forced into became something I built.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The struggles were real from day one.
I had to learn cigars from scratch—different wrappers, regions, strength levels—figuring out what made each one unique while trying to guide customers who knew way more than I did at the time.
And I was just a kid.
I’d have seasoned smokers and high-level clientele walk in, expecting expertise, and I had to earn their respect fast. No shortcuts. Just listening, learning, and proving myself one conversation at a time.
There were moments I felt out of place—but those moments are exactly what built me.
As you know, we’re big fans of Smokers etc. . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I genuinely love what I do.
This business gave me more than a career—it gave me opportunities. Over the years, I’ve been able to grow not just the shop, but my real estate portfolio too.
But what really sets me apart isn’t just business—it’s the relationships.
My customers aren’t just customers. They’re family. It’s not transactional when you walk in here—it’s personal. Conversations, connections, trust…that’s what keeps people coming back.
At the end of the day, anyone can sell cigars. Not everyone can build a place people feel at home.
What are your plans for the future?
Growing the space, growing the business—but more importantly, growing the relationships. Bringing in more events, more gatherings, and creating an experience people actually look forward to.
