Inspiring Conversations with Lukas Martin of Martin Photography Real-Estate Media

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lukas Martin

Hi Lukas, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started Martin Photography Real-Estate Media in July 2019 when a family friend, who was a realtor, approached me to capture drone photos and videos for a commercial property he had listed in Cleveland, OH. Wanting to do it professionally, I quickly obtained my FAA Part 107 license and completed the shoot. That experience sparked my curiosity, leading me to research ways to monetize my drone skills. I soon discovered the growing field of real estate media.

In January 2020, I landed my first major client just before the COVID-19 pandemic. That opportunity allowed me to gain valuable experience in real estate photography and videography. Fast forward to my senior year at Mentor High School—I had developed a strong passion for aviation and decided to attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL. Knowing I couldn’t manage all the shoots in Cleveland on my own, I hired my first photographer to take over local operations.

Over the past two years, the business has grown significantly. Today, our team consists of 12 talented individuals, including photographers, editors, a salesperson, and an executive assistant. We proudly serve around 300 realtors across Cleveland, OH, and Daytona Beach, FL. In May 2024, I successfully acquired one of our biggest competitors in Cleveland, further strengthening our presence in the market.

Most recently, we launched the Martin Photography app on the App Store, offering realtors a seamless way to manage appointments, download media, and access their portfolio anytime, anywhere. At Martin Photography, we don’t just capture homes—we create stories that sell. We’re excited for what’s ahead in 2025 and can’t wait to continue innovating and expanding.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been an easy ride. There have been many moments when I felt like quitting and selling my company, but I’ve always reminded myself that pushing through the challenges will be worth it in the end.

In the early days, my schedule was relentless working for five hours in the morning, attending school for eight hours, and then coming back to work until 9 or 10 PM. The long days and sacrifices were tough, but what kept me going was my competitive nature. I’ve always loved competitive sports, and I truly believe that running a business is one of the most challenging and rewarding games you can play.

Despite the obstacles, seeing this company grow into what it is today has been an incredible journey. I couldn’t have done it without my amazing team—employees who share the same vision and dedication. Their hard work and commitment continue to drive our success, and I’m excited to see what the future holds.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I would definitely consider myself a risk-taker, both in my personal life and in business. Being a business owner inherently involves taking risks, and I’ve come to understand that with growth comes greater responsibility.

When I first started, it was just me, and the risks weren’t as significant. But now, with 12 employees relying on the company, every decision I make impacts more than just myself. These individuals have families and responsibilities, and I’m always mindful of that.

That being said, I believe that taking risks is an essential part of growth. I ask myself, “What’s the worst that could happen?” Even if everything were to fall apart, I’d essentially break even—so the potential for reward outweighs the fear of failure.

As an entrepreneur, I’ve learned that it’s not about taking reckless risks, but rather calculated risks. Smart decisions based on data, experience, and intuition can lead to long-term success. It’s all about balancing risk with strategy.
