Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Morrison.
Hi Liz, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I first moved to Columbus, I was working as an adjunct professor and had some free time to work a few hours a week at a new, local startup. I was surprised to quickly fall in love with my “side gig,” and it was an easy decision not to renew my college contracts to pursue a small business career full-time. The best part of my job with that initial start-up was my bookkeeping tasks, and I launched Script and Ledger in 2020 to focus 100% on small business bookkeeping. I love supporting start-ups and small businesses for their financial needs as I grow my own small business.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Surrounding our business with the right people has been a key to our success. We love our clients, our partner tax firms, and our outstanding team. The biggest struggle has been to find those connections – to hire the right folks to join our team and to determine which clients we do and don’t want to have a relationship with.
We’ve been impressed with Script and Ledger, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Script and Ledger is a bookkeeping firm offering financial services to support entrepreneurs and businesses, such as bank reconciliations, expense coding, payroll, bill pay, and support for their tax preparation. Our brand is all about bringing together an understanding of a company’s unique story–their script–with accurate, professional bookkeeping–the ledger–to offer customized financial services to support and grow our client’s business.
Customer service is incredibly important to our brand. While we are technically an outsourced option, our clients feel like we are part of their team – more like an employee than a contractor!
We strive to build education into our services, speaking to our clients in an understandable language, not accounting jargon. We love consulting and advising our clients so that they can better understand their numbers and what it is that we are doing for them.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My business partner and sister, Jane, has built and shaped our business into what it is today. My husband Nick, also a small-business owner, has been our biggest advocate and a key advisor in big decisions for our company. Eric Bisignano, CPA, has been an amazing mentor in accounting and small business advice. Diana Webster, bookkeeper, introduced me to bookkeeping in the first place and has been an ongoing inspiration. Dara Schwartz, owner of Darista Dips, gave me the confidence to launch my own business in the middle of a pandemic with a 2-week-old baby.
