Inspiring Conversations with Lindsey Deck of Space Three

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Deck.

Hi Lindsey, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I opened Space Three in November 2019. It had been a long-time dream of mine to open my own fitness studio, and the stars aligned in 2019 to make that happen. After looking for a space in downtown Dayton, we found a beautiful space in the St. Clair Lofts. We signed the lease and got to the build-out. My dad is a general contractor, and he spearheaded the process – it was so much fun working with him to build my business! We opened in November 2019 offering a variety of group fitness classes, include barre, TRX, and dance cardio. The idea behind “Space Three” was creating a third space for people: a space outside the home or workspaces and a space where they could come for community and self-care. Space Three is a space for your mind, body, and soul. Space to breathe, sweat, and stretch.

After being open for approximately 5 months, we were ordered to shut down our business due to the pandemic. It was crushing! I did not know when or if we would be able to reopen. We had to quickly pivot to offering online classes in hopes that our members would return when/if we could reopen. Fortunately, we weathered the storm and were able to reopen in June 2020. Of course, things had to look a little different: we had increased sanitization, reduced class sizes, physical distancing, and masks coming to and from class. Our members stuck with us, and we were so grateful for that.

Today we have expanded our offerings to include more variety in our classes. Now, in addition to barre, TRX, and cardio dance classes, we have strength training, pilates, yoga, bootcamp, and trampoline classes. We really do have something for everyone, and the variety keeps things interesting and fun. We’re looking forward to our 4th year in business!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all! The first major hurdle was our closure during the pandemic. Although we were able to reopen a few months later, that was delayed after our business was vandalized during the riots downtown in 2020. Beyond that, we’ve had to constantly pivot and adjust our schedules, class capacity, and distancing and mask requirements to ensure people could safely return to the studio. We have also been challenged by the ordinary aches and pains of opening a small business and getting the word out about our offerings. Despite the challenges, though, we are enjoying every minute of it!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Space Three is a boutique fitness studio located in downtown Dayton in the St. Clair Lofts. We offer a boutique fitness environment but with a variety of classes, so you never have to get bored! We also have childcare available for those parents who need it. We have a fantastic community of people that makes coming to class fun! We’re not just there to workout; we’re there to connect with others.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
