Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Flowers.
Hi Kelsey, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey in wellness began in 2012 where I started to seek out more holistic options to support my mental and physical health. In 2014 I had decided to enroll two weeks before the massage program started. Having no idea the valuable and expansive knowledge of the body and how it would change the way I looked at everything. From moving through school, to further training in Olympia, WA and Big Sur, CA, my relationship to the body grew. InStill was established in August of 2020, amidst inspiration and encouragement of friends. To this day I continue to have a complete fascination with the connection of our bodily systems and our connection to the earth, and how we can work in harmony with all of it. After a few years of exploring the massage field in Chiropractic and spa settings, I settled into working my favorite position yet, beside incredible practitioners at an acupuncture studio.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think that most people have similar struggles in work environments. Finding value, purpose, and joy has been my compass. Being of service and navigating support for people in the past few years has been a bit more challenging with the collective all having some kind of impact in our lives. Stressors are high, which chronically, takes its toll on the people. It makes caring by way of massage and meditation more necessary than I’d ever imagined.
We’ve been impressed with InStill Health + Wellness, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is in the ever-growing wellness industry. I share massage therapy, guided meditation, botanical insights, earth-friendly body + skincare items, and more. In the massage portion of my business, my specialty is in LomiLomi massage – a practice rooted in ancient Hawaiian tradition. It sees people as more than bodies, coming with their emotions, thoughts, and spirit. I love this style because in my perspective it seems truly reverent to the body, acknowledging our connection to earthly and ethereal elements.
I believe what sets me apart from other practitioners in my industry is intention. My intention with bodywork is always to help someone rest, restore and repair – while being built upon the intention I set forth when I wake up in the morning, my intention as I create meals to nourish myself, how I show up to the clinic, how I share space with clients, and how I perform the sacred bodywork itself.
I’m most proud of navigating being a woman in business and accompanied by other women in business. Taxes, practices, marketing, ethics, motivation, education, as well as creativity are just some of the things that get to be learned and explored in business. Unless you’re in it yourself or know a business owner closely, it seems a lot more glamorous than working for a large corporation or 9-5, but there’s a whole lot more than meets the eye.
I’d love your readers to know that health cannot take a back seat to career, relationships, home, and other things. There are so many free ways to take care of oneself, of which I adore sharing, and it doesn’t have to be a 7-step regimen, certain diet, exercise, or expensive treatments. One thing I love to offer people is the tool of self-massage. It can support our nervous and muscular systems, that allows a standard of care that takes only moments.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was growing up with such a large extended family. My mom is one of 11 siblings who once every summer, would sneak away with all their partners and kids to a beach vacation where we would all stay in one house, make meals together, play games on the beach, and enjoy each other’s company for a week. The same family that would pile into one house at the holidays and occupy most of the attendance at weddings. My cousins closest in age are my best friends still today.
