Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Nabors.
Katie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hey there, my name is Katie and I come from a lifetime of practice in the performing arts, which has included training and performing in both theatre and dance. My experience and passion for dance was my initial reason for entering into the nutrition and dietetics profession. The physical toll that accompanies careers in dance parallel those of other athletes; however, there is often a lack of nutrition education in the dance community when compared with the sports community. After years of teaching and performing, I knew I wanted more, and began the process of becoming a Registered Dietitian. Fast forward to the present and I have my Master’s of Science in Nutrition, Master’s of Fine Arts in Dance, and I am a Registered Dietitian. I was able to continue my artistic pursuits while working towards my goal of becoming a nutrition professional working with artistic athletes.
I founded my business, Northcoast Nutrition in 2022 with the mission of providing nutrition consulting and education to high performance individuals. I believe food can be used to fuel the body for optimal physical performance and to nourish the mind to maximize intellectual performance. My goal is to teach and empower individuals to properly fuel and nourish themselves, whether it be for cognitive and intellectual performance in the workplace or physical performance on the field, court, or stage. I provide nutrition counseling and group education with a food-first approach that’s balanced and works in harmony with each person’s unique lifestyle and needs.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a very non-linear journey, much like a roller coaster. I feel like I always have a lot of forward momentum; however, the ups and downs are a constant reality. I wear many hats, so to speak, and sometimes the act of constantly shifting gears, or switching hats, will feel like I am being derailed. I am learning that I thrive and do very well at certain tasks, and others are still a messy work in progress, and I have to be okay with that. I have a mentor who often tells me that done is better than perfect and perfection is the enemy of growth. I have to always remember that when I get tough on myself.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Northcoast Nutrition?
Northcoast Nutrition is a nutrition consulting company that takes a mind-body approach to nutrition counseling and education. The mind-body approach to nutrition addresses the what, why, when, where, and how of making daily choices about food & wellness. Northcoast Nutrition understands that proper nutrition is a foundation for optimizing overall health and long-term well-being.
What makes me proud – Northcoast focuses on being the person I needed when I was younger. I want to educate and counsel the individual on what healthy eating patterns and habits can look like. Be the person that fights for the performer and athlete to believe in themselves, but also tell them it’s okay to have fears. To champion the WHOLE person on and off the field, court, studio, stage, track, or pool. To be able to say no question is too crazy, and no feeling is ever invalid. Performers and athletes are fiercely competitive, brilliantly driven, and passionately committed to their training; I know this from experience, and they need people in their corner to both ground them and embolden them to be the best version of themselves. It’s not just about food, it’s about the whole person, but everybody has to eat, and I want to help performers and athletes have healthy relationships with food for their lifetime.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Putting yourself out there day after day with the potential to face rejection is something that, to me, is a necessary daily risk to succeed as a business owner. As a performer, risk-taking is in my blood; every time you walk on stage, you are taking a risk and have to be fearless in the face of potential failure. I used to work at theatre camp that had the motto “Dare to fail gloriously” big choices and big risks will either teach you what not to do next time or will surprise you with new discoveries!
