Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanie Keehn.
Joanie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My career started 21 years ago when my daughter started kindergarten. At the time I was a single mom working 70-80 hours a week, missing all the important milestones in my children’s lives. Three days of listening to other children talking about mommies and daddies waking them up, eating breakfast, and reading bedtime stories broke her. I immediately quit my job and took an office management position in an insurance agent’s office and refused to work over 40 hours a week. I spent five years there, left and went to work for a large insurance company and spent another 5 years. When that opportunity left, I chose to open my own agency and have continued to grow.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In life there are always obstacles. Some of the challenges have been trusting myself and others, stepping out in faith, finances, relationships, education, understanding and regulations.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are an insurance agency that specializes in Health Insurance, Medicare plans, ancillary plans and life insurance for individuals, families, and small businesses in Ohio. We are known as an agency that puts faith first, service second and ourselves last. We truly get to know the person in front of us, what is important to them, and what future things do we need to prepare for. Once we have this information, we help evaluate plans that meet their needs, wants and must. We assist in their enrollment and then we stay with them throughout their lifetime.
We also take good care of our employees.
We work together on personal growth plans, professional development, life skills, team building, leadership, mentoring and loving people right where they are in life. Helping others become who they have been called to be is my “Why.” I have learned that servicing others in areas where they feel they cannot breathe, function, understand, grow or become who they dream they can be is what brings me ultimate joy.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
God has put many people and organizations in my path to encourage me along the way. Community and fellowship have been and continue to be very important. I meet twice a month with a business coach through Southwest Consulting. HealthMarkets gave me an avenue to open my own agency and they provide weekly trainings and comradery. Nabip is a national organization of professionals like myself that get together and navigate regulation and advocate on behalf of our members. Friends, family, colleagues, and clients all have been supportive. I would spend the rest of my life naming them if I tried. Finally, my biggest cheerleader has been my husband. He has believed in me even when I have doubted myself.
