Today we’d like to introduce you to Jess Mossbruger
Hi Jess, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey with Miss Jess Literacy started long before I ever imagined running my own business. I spent nearly a decade in the classroom, teaching everything from preschool to kindergarten to second grade. I have a degree in education with licenses in both general education and intervention, along with a master’s in reading— literacy has always been at the heart of what I do.
In September 2022, I made the difficult decision to leave the classroom, not entirely sure what was next. I started tutoring at local libraries, just wanting to continue helping kids in a more personalized way. But after just a month, I realized—this could be something bigger. There were so many parents looking for guidance on how to support their kids, and I knew I could help!
That’s when I launched Miss Jess Literacy, a space for moms to find practical, play-based strategies to boost their kids’ reading skills. What started as simple tutoring quickly grew into a resource for families everywhere, blending my teaching background with my love for early literacy.
Now, I offer a parent course that teaches you how to help your child learn to read, an on-demand kids class- perfect to get your child ready for kindergarten, and I’ve built a team of tutors helping kids all over the U.S become strong readers and writers. It’s been an incredible journey, and I feel so grateful to be doing what I love every day!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—like any big change, there have been challenges along the way!
When I left the classroom in September 2022, I knew I wanted to continue helping kids with literacy, but I had no idea how to build a business. I started tutoring in local libraries, but figuring out how to turn that into something bigger felt overwhelming. I had to learn everything from marketing and social media to business management, all while navigating life outside of the classroom.
Another challenge was shifting my mindset—for so long, I had been a teacher inside a school system, following set structures and guidelines. Stepping into this new role meant creating my own path, trusting my expertise, and learning to put myself out there in a whole new way.
Growing a business also comes with trial and error. I had many moments where I doubted myself (and honestly still do!), times when things didn’t go as planned, and plenty of behind-the-scenes learning curves. But through it all, the passion for helping kids and supporting parents has kept me going. Seeing the impact of my work—whether it’s a parent finally feeling confident in helping their child read or a struggling student gaining the skills they need—makes every challenge worth it.
It hasn’t been easy, but I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Miss Jess Literacy is all about making reading fun, engaging, and accessible for kids while empowering parents to support their child’s learning at home. We specialize in play-based, research-based literacy instruction that helps kids build confidence and strong reading skills!
What sets us apart is that we believe it takes a village to raise a child, and we want to be a part of that village for the families. My mission goes beyond just the 30-minute tutoring sessions—I want to equip parents with the tools and confidence to support their child’s literacy journey every day. That’s why I offer parent courses, on-demand reading classes for kids, and ongoing support, so our families feel empowered and connected throughout the process.
But it’s not just about helping kids become strong readers—it’s also about helping them fall in love with reading. I want kids to see books as something exciting, not just something they have to do for school. By making reading engaging and accessible, I hope to grow a lifelong love for books and learning in every child we work with.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the community I’ve built on instagram. It’s a space where moms can come for simple, practical reading strategies that fit into their busy lives. My goal is to take the overwhelm out of teaching kids to read and replace it with confidence, connection, and joy.
If you’re a parent looking for support, whether through 1:1 tutoring, self-paced courses, or engaging kids’ classes, Miss Jess Literacy is here to help!
