Inspiring Conversations with Dow Cameron of Cameron Custom Containers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dow Cameron.

Hi Dow, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in Zanesville, Ohio and attended Tri-Valley High School before going on to the University of Mount Union to play football and continue my education. After graduating, my plan—something I had in mind since middle school—was to return home and work in the family business, Dow Cameron Oil & Gas, for the rest of my career.

Our family has been in the oil and gas industry since my great-grandfather’s time, starting with Cameron Drilling, so it’s always been a big part of my life. About a month after finishing college, I started thinking about a new opportunity in the storage and container industry. The idea originally came from seeing companies like PODS, but I wasn’t interested in getting into the moving business. Instead, I saw potential in container sales and rentals.

I started with just two containers to test the market, selling and renting them throughout Ohio. For the next 2–3 years, I stayed busy growing that side of the business while continuing to work in the family company. During that time, I kept seeing people convert containers into offices and homes, and I figured I should give it a shot myself.

Last winter, I started my first build—a container home—which was completed in early spring of 2025. That project led to the creation of Cameron Custom Containers. In our first year, we’ve completed a wide range of projects, including container homes, job site offices, chicken coops, and even ticket booths for the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

I love what I do because every project is different and comes with its own challenges. More than anything, it’s rewarding to help people take their ideas—whether it’s something they imagined or saw online—and turn them into reality.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been easy at times, but that’s where you learn the most. Throughout the first year, one of the biggest challenges was finding the right people—those who have the drive, take pride in their work, and genuinely care about what they’re building.

Working with shipping containers also comes with its own set of challenges. You’re dealing with a narrow steel structure, so it takes a lot of creativity to design functional layouts and properly plan both exterior and interior modifications. On top of that, once you start cutting into a steel box, it becomes an ongoing challenge to keep everything sealed, moisture-free, and leak-proof.

As you know, we’re big fans of Cameron Custom Containers. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
