Inspiring Conversations with Chad Kauffman of Kitty Poo Club

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chad Kauffman.

Hi Chad, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My father came up with the idea for an all-in-one disposable cat litter box. At first, I thought it was a terrible idea for several reasons, including the potential for leakage, the weight of the litter, and the high cost of shipping. My main interest was building an e-commerce business focused on a direct-to-consumer model.

After doing extensive research, I discovered that the cat litter industry was a $4 billion market, and I began to think he might be onto something. We developed a prototype and started testing it with approximately 50 cat owners. Based on their feedback, we made numerous improvements and iterations to the product.

In October 2017, we launched our website with our first-generation litter box and signed up approximately 1,200 customers in the first month. At that time, our products were being hand-assembled by high school students working after school in a small 3,000-square-foot facility.

Demand for the product grew quickly, requiring us to expand our space, manufacturing capacity, and marketing efforts. Today, we operate out of a 120,000-square-foot facility with automated production lines and have shipped millions of products.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course not. No business is. We have had challenges over the years with supply chains, COVID, inflation, finding employees, etc.

Kitty Poo Club was born from a simple but powerful idea: cat ownership should be joyful, not a chore.
Founded in Wooster, Ohio by father-and-son team Porter and Chad Kauffman, Kitty Poo Club set out to completely reinvent the litter box experience — not just improve it. The inspiration came from an unlikely moment: noticing a silica gel pack in a spa supply package and thinking, why couldn’t that be cat litter? That spark led to what is now a patented, all-in-one monthly subscription that hundreds of thousands of cat parents rely on.
Our pitch is simple: one cat, one box, one month. Each month, subscribers receive a fresh, ready-to-use litter box — made from 100% recycled, waterproof cardboard lined with FDA-approved, food-grade coating — along with their choice of litter. At the end of the month, they simply toss or recycle it. No scrubbing. No hauling heavy plastic boxes. No mess.
What truly sets us apart is the combination of patented innovation, environmental responsibility, and radical convenience. The litter box is the shipping box, which reduces waste and packaging. We offer five litter types — including silica, diatomite, clay, and organic corn and wheat options sourced from U.S.-grown crops — because we know every cat (and cat parent) is different. And everything ships free.
We’re most proud of building a brand that genuinely improves daily life for cat owners. We’ve been recognized on the Inc. 5000 list, but more than any accolade, what drives us is hearing from subscribers that they actually enjoy having a cat now because the one chore they dreaded most has been solved. That’s the mission — taking the “ew” out of “meow” and giving people more time with the pets they love.
