Inspiring Conversations with Casey McFadden of McFadden Pharmacy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey McFadden.

Hi Casey, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up as a child of a restaurant owner and worked there myself all the way through high school into college. I didn’t want to be in the restaurant business and like most kids didn’t really know what I wanted to do but did like the idea of what my brother was pursuing in pharmacy. So, i followed in his footsteps rather than fathers. I graduated for Ohio Northern University with a BS in Pharmacy in 1996. I took my first job with Rite Aid pharmacy as a staff pharmacist. Within 3 years I took over the Pharmacy Managerial position at another location, then shortly after took over the same position in a newly opened store. I did not like the fact that I had no control over what was needed to improve the store even as manager so shortly after that I elected to leave that position and was hired by a family owed independent pharmacy– Allens Pharmacy. It was from there that I grew to love pharmacy, The owner, Steve Allen, was a second-generation pharmacist at the store, and he unknowingly taught me the desire and passion that was required to work with people to run and operate a pharmacy successfully. This gave me the desire to follow my fathers footsteps in owning my own store and that opportunity arose in 2003, when a friend of mine approached me about purchasing his store as he was ready to retire. 22 years later McFadden Pharmacy has grown substantially. We went from one store front to now 3 storefronts, converting the next two stores into what is now a gift shop with local artisan’s items as well as other unique items. It slowly transitions into a full line archery shop and hunting dept. Which is actually my other passion-the outdoors. I had another local business owner in 2014 approach me when he was selling his business, a local gas station and hunting stop. What began as about 100sq ft of space is now about 3000sq ft featuring full line archery service, range, and retail.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I took over the store I was married with 3 children all under the age of 3. My wife was trying to work full time but it just wasnt working. We decided for her to be a stay at home mom. This was wonderful for the kids but created some issues financially. The first 5-10 years of owning the business was often pay check to paycheck both within the pharmacy and at home. Often going 2-3 weeks without pay at home to be able to pay the bills at the pharmacy.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about McFadden Pharmacy?
McFadden Pharmacy is an independent pharmacy that strives to provide the best possible care and support that it can give for the care of the patients and the community. This care goes way beyond the 9:00am-5:00pm business hours. McFadden Pharmacy is not just a destination for medication but a place you can go or call for help. We want to be accepted almost like part of the family. My cell phone is on the answer machine so that the community has access whenever it is needed. I encourage my employee’s to be involved in the community during business hours and after. I often call the pharmacy 411. Meaning we are the place to go for information in the community. Whether it is getting a time for trick or treat or picking up the chickens at the post office. We do what every we can to help our patients.

Patients are not just a name or a number. They are real and have real needs and concerns and we are here to help them.
The gift shop continues in this as we offer a place where local artisans can come set up their items at no charge to them. We sell each item at a markup only, that way it’s a win-win for both of us.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Although Im the owner and pharmacist, my technicians and clerks are the face of McFadden Pharmacy. They do the real work and talk to the customers every day Without a group of exceptional people in these roles the pharmacy would not be what it is today.
