Inspiring Conversations with Briana Hunter of Bri Styled

Today we’d like to introduce you to Briana Hunter.

Hi Briana, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a 25 year old licensed braider located on the east side of Columbus, Ohio. I started doing my own yarn faux locs when I was a senior in high school. I went on to college where I continued doing yarn faux locs on myself and soon began experimenting with other protective styles. Classmates became interested in me providing services for them as my skills improved. As time went on people became more interested in me trying other styles and services on them like natural loc retwist and style, natural braids, and a wide variety of other protective styles. By my senior year of college, I had a hand full of regular clientele that I knew would continue even after college. Following graduation, my clientele slowed down a bit due to work requirements however, I still had a few regular clients. My primary focus became my corporate job for about 6-8 months until I finally decided to pick up more clientele as a means of making extra money. I created a booking link and the rest was history! At 22 I moved out of my parents’ home to a rental property with my sister where we had an extra bedroom that I was able to convert into a small space to continue doing hair. That continued for about 2 years until I made the decision to become a licensed braider and begin working in a shop. Today, I am now a licensed braider specializing in braiding and natural/faux loc services.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My journey to and through becoming a licensed braider and business professional is still an ongoing one and it has not been an easy one at all. It has become a full-time job on top of continuing to maintain a full-time corporate position and choosing to continue my education. Even with all of that, life in itself can be a road filled with speed bumps as personal issues and stresses constantly arise. Things like making sure you are consistently meeting client needs, keeping up with scheduled, handling day-to-day activities and tasks, homework and even deaths in the family were and still are struggles that I am met with at any given time. However, by the grace of God, I’ve learned not to let things KEEP me down. Feel, process, and heal but you have to keep going. You learn that life is an ever-flowing river of ups and downs but you have to learn to better navigate the current each and every day.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love that our city has so many dedicated professionals that are willing to help. The amount of love, support, and direction I’ve received over the years has been truly amazing. This city is a hot commodity for upcoming and continuing business professionals in any and all markets. What I like least about our city is that violence continues to grow and spread. I wish there were more community programs that the youth and adults were able to participate in that drive interest in more productive and creative interest expression. Additionally, I wish that there were more spaces available for youth sports that allow youth programming to fully thrive and are not primarily focused on financial gain.
