Today we’d like to introduce you to Anita Kwan.
Hi Anita, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Capturing moments in videos has always been a passion of mine. When I was a kid, I borrowed my Dad’s camcorder and made short films and music videos with my friends. A camera felt very natural in my hands and I loved being creative with it. That passion has stuck with me through adulthood and I got my degree in Film Studies at Ohio State University. After college, I explored many creative fields in the video such as wedding videos, corporate videos, events, and promotional work.
I slowly discovered my passion for storytelling with a focus on Women, People of Color, and LGBTQ+ businesses and organizations. I decided to work for myself and started my own video production company in 2016. Currently, I get to work with a lot of amazing people within my community and help their businesses or organizations grow through video marketing content.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My transition from working for someone to working for myself was surprisingly smooth. In my previous job, I had many responsibilities on top of just filming and editing. Because it was a small business, I got a close look into what it was like to run a business. I learned how to connect with clients, write proposals, figure out the logistics of production and how bring a project to life. I also kept in contact with many past clients that were so kind in helping with my transition as they hired me and referred me to their colleagues. So once I was on my own, I was able to hit the ground running.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Reel Hoot Productions?
I started Reel Hoot because I love connecting with people through the process of storytelling. From the initial meeting of “getting to know you”, to “wow, you have a great story – let’s get it out there!”, to hitting record and editing it all together… it’s so much fun to collaborate and create something meaningful for each of my clients. I also love embracing the diversity of many voices because there is a lack of it in media whether that’s in front or behind the camera.
As a Chinese-American woman and lesbian, I wanted to see more people like me! I wanted to be a part of that change and that is how Reel Hoot was born. Reel Hoot is a video production company that has a passion for helping women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ businesses and organizations be seen through videos in a fun and collaborative environment. We create brand videos, event highlights, training videos, and promotional videos. Our videos are short-form, a documentary style which means it is perfect for social media and connecting with viewers with an authentic lens.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love how my city is very community oriented and diverse. We are small but mighty – there is something for everyone here. What I like least is that even though we are diverse within city limits, outside of it can still be very conservative and scary.
