Hidden Gems: Meet Scott Colosimo of LAND Energy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Colosimo.

Scott Colosimo

Scott, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I founded LAND in 2020, positioning it at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution. Specializing in two-wheel electric vehicles with connected, swappable batteries, I envisioned LAND as the embodiment of a shift toward sustainable transportation. My leadership reflects a dedication to affordability, design-centric, and quality, carrying these principles over from my first venture, Cleveland CycleWerks, into the electric future with LAND. This pivot marks a significant evolution in my entrepreneurial journey, leveraging extensive research and development to create products that meet the growing consumer demand for eco-friendly transportation solutions.

My journey into entrepreneurship is rooted in a deep-seated passion for bikes, cars, and speed, coupled with an upbringing surrounded by cooking, baking, and art. My early experiences with BMX biking laid the foundation for a life dedicated to creating and innovating. Cleveland CycleWerks, which I started in 2009, was my first foray into the business world, focusing on affordable and quality motorcycles. I successfully scaled this venture globally until its sale in 2020. The transition to LAND was sparked by my commitment to electric vehicle research and development, leading to a significant pivot from gasoline to electric. A key moment in this transition was the in-house development of batteries, which highlighted the potential of a connected battery platform. This realization cemented LAND’s direction in the electric vehicle industry.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Transitioning from Cleveland CycleWerks to pioneering in the electric vehicle space, particularly in the Midwest, I encountered a significant obstacle: the scarcity of venture capital for sustainability and electric vehicle projects. This region is notably tough for raising funds in such innovative sectors, necessitating a reliance on personal investment and a bootstrap mentality.

Venture capital’s absence in the Midwest meant navigating a path fraught with personal and financial risks, emphasizing the importance of innovation and sustainability despite financial constraints. Aligning my passion for electric vehicles with the strategic and financial demands of venture funding introduced a new layer of complexity, making the journey even more challenging.

The commitment to manufacturing in the United States, particularly in Cleveland, Ohio, added another layer of complexity. Manufacturing demands precision, quality, and a significant capital investment, making it a humbling yet rewarding challenge. It was a testament to my belief in creating long-term value and job growth through physical products despite the easier paths available through less tangible, software-based ventures.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
At LAND, we pioneer in crafting two-wheeled electric vehicles, highlighted by our flagship, the District, in Scrambler and Street models for off-road and urban use. Each boasts up to 120 miles range, 70+ mph speeds, and four adaptable ride modes, ranging from eBike to motorcycle mode for growing rider skills. Our innovation extends to a versatile hot-swappable battery system, offering a choice between a 1.8kWh battery for daily use or a 4.8kWh for extended adventures. LAND’s mission centers on merging performance with sustainability, ensuring a forward-thinking approach to electric mobility.

What are your plans for the future?
We have strategically focused LAND on expanding our market share within the electric vehicle sector by leveraging our unique value proposition: two-wheel electric vehicles with connected, swappable batteries. This focus is driven by a commitment to sustainability and innovation, aligning with the growing consumer demand for eco-friendly transportation solutions. Our expansion strategy is multi-faceted, involving the continuous evolution of our product offerings to meet diverse consumer needs, exploring strategic partnerships to enhance distribution channels, and entering new geographical markets with a tailored approach that respects local preferences and regulatory environments.

Driving positive financial performance at LAND hinges on a balanced strategy of innovation, operational efficiency, and strategic capital allocation. Transitioning from a bootstrap funding model with Cleveland CycleWerks to a venture-funded approach signifies a strategic pivot towards leveraging external capital for accelerated growth. This transition has enabled us to invest significantly in research and development, streamline manufacturing processes, and expand our market reach. Our focus on manufacturing efficiency and quality control not only reduces waste but also improves product reliability, enhancing customer satisfaction and reducing costs.
