Hidden Gems: Meet Robert Uta of Craft & Revive

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Uta.

Hi Robert, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to the US from Romania in 2017 after meeting my wife, Alli, while working as an exchange student.

Like many people, my life took an unexpected turn during COVID-19 when I was laid off from my job as a bartender. One of my close friends had just started working at a local furniture shop that specialized in selling and refinishing pieces. When they needed an extra hand, I jumped at the opportunity—it felt like fate.

Before working there, I had zero experience in refinishing, but that quickly changed. I fell in love with the finishing process—it was so artistic and satisfying. My manager took the time to teach me everything he knew. I’ll always be grateful for this experience because that’s when I knew: this is what I want to do for my career.

As I learned more, I started picking up small refinishing jobs on the side. With each job, and guidance from friends and family members, my knowledge of the craft grew. Eventually, Alli and I decided to take the leap and turn our passion into a business of our own. And that’s how Craft & Revive was born.

Today, Craft & Revive restores cabinets, furniture, and doors around Dayton. I’m deeply grateful for the journey—from layoff to launching my passion—and for clients who trust my craft every day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Just like every other business, I’ve hit a lot of bumps on the road. One of the biggest struggles was learning the process—understanding how products behave, double-checking before spraying, and troubleshooting equipment. Another challenge was transitioning from my regular painting job to full-time with Craft & Revive. I never felt 100% ready, so one day I took the leap—and never looked back.

We’ve been impressed with Craft & Revive, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Craft & Revive is a refinishing and painting company in Dayton, Ohio, where we focus on kitchen cabinets, doors, and furniture. I started it with my wife, Alli—she’s an amazing artist who came up with the name and designed our logo.

What really sets us apart is how much care goes into every job. It’s usually just me on site, so I’m hands-on with every detail and I follow a dialed-in system from prep to final coat. We use high-quality Italian paints, Festool sanders and vacuums for dust-free sanding, and Kremlin sprayers to get that smooth, durable finish. We believe that quality products and attention to detail make a world of difference.

At the end of the day, we want people to know that instead of replacing everything, you can bring your cabinets, doors and furniture back to life with a good refinish and make them feel new again.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
People can reach out to me about potential projects through my website (craftandrevive.com)—usually we start with a few photos, a conversation about your goals, and then a quote and timeline. I always welcome designers, contractors, and realtors to collaborate when they need a refinisher.

The best way to support Craft & Revive is by leaving reviews and sharing my before-and-after projects with friends or on social media, since word-of-mouth means everything for a small business like mine.
