Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Larson.
Hi Robert, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
It all started when I moved to Ohio from Florida when I was 21. My uncle gave me a place to stay as long as i helped fix up this house he just purchased. He taught me a lot as the years went on with every rental he had. In 2018 I download an app called Takl, which was an app that people would use to find someone to do small jobs. In 2020 they went out of business, and I realized that I actually like doing this type of work and meeting new people every day, so I started telling more people that I do handyman work on the side. I met my fiancé in 2023 and she’s the reason I went full-time as a handyman in August of 2024. She is very supportive and believed in me more than believed in myself. I also left a supervisor position at my last job to do this full-time, and I’m actually still contracted with that job as a handyman to come in and fix stuff when needed. Its still hard to believe that I have my own business and can make a living for me and my family.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not, there were a lot more unknowns than I thought. As a handyman, every week is different and I honestly cant believe Im still doing things ive never done before. lol There are a lot of different hats I wear to work in the field, and on the business side. Thats what makes this interesting and fulfilling.
As you know, we’re big fans of Larson’s Handyman Services. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Im A handyman serving all of Lake County. I went full-time a year and a half ago, and business has been great from people finding me on Google and Mostly referrals or repeat customers. I mostly do small jobs, furniture assembly, light fixtures, faucets, toilet repair, grab bars, picture hanging, etc. I think what sets me apart is I show up on time, In clean clothes, and a clean vehicle. I’m upfront if I’m uncomfortable about a specific job request. I communicate well with every customer, I wear shoe protectors and clean up after every task, and I have lots of reviews saying so.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I think most people get the wrong idea about owning your own business. Yes, you control your own schedule, but there are a lot of long nights, and having to work 7 days a week at times. Its important to have money saved up because there will be slow times. I also think one of the 1st things you should do is make sure your significant other is supportive with your plan to start a business, otherwise there will be resentment, and possibly fights because they dont understand what it takes to run a business. So I made sure over and over again that my fiancé fully supported me making this decision.
