Hidden Gems: Meet Rabia Mendaci of Taxobook llc

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rabia Mendaci.

Hi Rabia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born on December 7, 1979, in a small village in Algeria called Ait Asjussa, in the region of Bejaia. I grew up in Seddouk, Bejaia in a large family of four sisters and six brothers. From an early age, I understood responsibility. I worked hard not only for myself, but to help support my family and contribute to a better future for all of us.

I studied accounting at the University of Bejaia -Algeria, where I built a strong foundation in finance. But beyond my education, I carried a dream of America. It was a dream I had since I was a child. As soon as I reached the eligible age of 18, I began participating in the Diversity Visa lottery every year. I stayed consistent and never gave up. In 2011, that dream became reality. It was a lesson that has stayed with me ever since: persistence always pays off.

In 2016, I moved to Columbus, Ohio. I arrived with determination, but without speaking English. Like many immigrants, I had to start from zero. I worked in warehouses, in hotels as a banquet server and bartender, and drove for Uber and Lyft—doing whatever it took to support my family while learning a new language and adapting to a new life.

That same year, I married my wife, Leah, and together we began building our life in the United States. Today, we are proud parents of our daughter, Melania, who inspires me every day to keep moving forward and to build something meaningful.

Even while working multiple jobs, I never lost sight of my professional path. I continued studying accounting and taxation, determined to return to my field. There were moments of doubt and frustration, but I refused to stay stuck. I made a decision to stop waiting and start building.

At the age of 46, I launched my own business, Taxobook, providing tax preparation, bookkeeping, and financial guidance to individuals and small businesses. Starting a business later in life, especially as an immigrant, was not easy, but it was necessary. I wanted to create something based on integrity, education, and long-term value for my clients.

As the U.S. tax landscape continues to evolve—especially following the major tax law changes introduced around 2025—I saw a growing need for clear, practical guidance. That is what led me to write my first book, “2026 U.S. Tax Updates: Individuals & Small Businesses – Practical Playbook.”

This playbook was designed to simplify complex tax updates and help individuals and small business owners understand what actually matters: what changed, how it affects them, and how to make better financial decisions. Instead of overwhelming readers with technical language, I focused on clarity, real-life application, and actionable insights.

Today, I continue to grow Taxobook while advancing my expertise. I am currently studying for the Enrolled Agent and CPA exams to provide even higher-level service to my clients.

My journey is not just about building a business—it is about persistence, growth, and purpose. From a small village in Algeria to building a company in Ohio, my story reflects the belief that with hard work, discipline, and patience, anything is possible. I am committed to helping others succeed by providing honest guidance and empowering them to make informed financial decisions.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. One of my biggest challenges when I arrived in the United States was the language barrier. I came without speaking English, which made even simple daily interactions difficult, let alone building a professional career in accounting and taxation.

Another challenge was starting over at an older age. Many people begin their careers early, but I had to rebuild everything from zero in my late 30s and 40s. It required patience, humility, and a strong mindset to accept starting again while still believing in my long-term vision.

Cultural differences also played a role. Understanding how business operates in a new country, adapting to new systems, and earning trust within a different environment takes time, consistency, and credibility.

At the same time, I carried financial responsibilities. Like many immigrants, I worked multiple jobs—warehouses, hotels, and driving for Uber and Lyft—while continuing my studies and supporting my family. Balancing work, education, and family life was one of the toughest challenges, but it built my discipline and resilience.

Another modern challenge in my field is the rise of artificial intelligence. Many professionals in tax and accounting see AI as a threat. I chose to see it differently. Instead of being afraid, I embraced it as a partner—using it to improve efficiency, stay informed, and better serve my clients. I believe the future belongs to professionals who adapt, not those who resist change.

All of these challenges shaped who I am today. They strengthened my mindset, sharpened my skills, and reinforced my belief that persistence, adaptability, and integrity are the keys to long-term success.
