Hidden Gems: Meet Omar Melendez of Imagine that photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Omar Melendez.

Hi Omar, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In high school, I always appreciated the arts. I admired how people could turn their hobbies into a craft—something meaningful and memorable. That made me reflect on what I was truly passionate about, and the answer was clear: photography. I’ve always loved looking back at childhood photos, reminiscing about the moments they captured, and appreciating that someone thought to take them.

When I met my wife, she saw how passionate I was about photography and surprised me with my first camera one Christmas. It was a beginner camera, but to me, it meant everything. It gave me the chance to start turning my dream into a reality. I took it everywhere—capturing family moments, scenic landscapes, and anything that sparked my creativity.

I began researching photography techniques and studying the craft in depth. I offered free photo sessions to family and friends to test and improve my skills. I also attended local workshops to learn from other photographers and continue growing. Once I had mastered my starter camera, I upgraded my gear and pushed myself to take my work to the next level.

What keeps me going every single day is my determination and love for what I do. Photography isn’t just a passion—it’s a way for me to share joy, capture memories, and constantly challenge myself creatively.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t believe anything comes easy—and in my case, that’s especially true. I spent years struggling with depression after losing my mother during the early stages of adulthood. Her passing took a heavy toll on my life, and I had to put my dreams on hold to enter the workforce.

When I finally decided to pursue photography as a business, the journey wasn’t easy. Choosing my style and creating a brand identity was challenging. Getting through the basics of starting a business took time, patience, and a lot of learning. I had to continuously work on improving my skills and growing my craft.

Photography is a highly competitive field, and building a name for myself took time. I had to push myself out of my comfort zone to connect with local businesses and grow my presence. But I’ve always been willing to put in the work and give it my all to make this dream a success.

As you know, we’re big fans of Imagine that photography. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Photography brings fun, creativity, and lasting memories to every project I take on. I specialize in Event and Portrait photography, capturing those special moments that clients can cherish for years to come. I am proud to have built lasting relationships with many return clients and to provide photography services to local businesses and organizations, allowing me to give back to the community that supports me. My company is built on a foundation of excellent customer service, high-quality work, and a genuine passion for what I do.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Patience is a necessity in everything you do—and in photography, it’s a virtue you must have. It’s a highly competitive field, and it can be overwhelming at times—whether it’s choosing the right camera, finding the right lens, or building a steady client base. Like any service-based profession, there are dry periods. But it’s during those times that growth can happen. Learning how to thrive in those moments, continue developing your skills, and approach each photo with a fresh perspective is what truly sets a photographer apart.
