Hidden Gems: Meet Kevin Mooney of The Mohicans Treehouse Resort

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Mooney.

Hi Kevin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My partner and I didn’t set out to build a resort, we set out to build a place our family and friends could escape. Over a decade ago, we discovered 77 private acres in Ohio’s Mohican Valley, which began with a simple cabin serving as a private retreat. We had always loved the area and had been coming here our whole lives, so it felt like the perfect choice for us. Word got around, and soon friends were asking to stay, couples were asking to get married, and The Mohicans Treehouse Resort and Grand Barn Wedding Venue began to take shape, one thoughtful project at a time.

Since that ‘eureka’ moment, we’ve grown intentionally: two country homes, four cabins, ten architecturally unique treehouses, and a wedding venue that lets people celebrate in the forest without giving up modern comfort. From day one, sustainability has guided our choices, influencing us to include passive-solar design, radiant heat, eco-friendly products, and non-toxic cleaning protocols. We’ve kept it family-owned and hands-on, partnering with the local Amish so every structure feels authentic to the valley.

Today, The Mohicans is known for our one-of-a-kind treehouse stays and some of the most unforgettable wedding scenery in the country. We started as a retreat for friends and family to reconnect, and that’s the feeling we want our guests to carry home after every visit!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t know if anyone in hospitality would say smooth is the word, worth it, yes, but not smooth. Building lodging in the trees on 77 rural acres means you’re juggling engineering, weather, and much more. Early on we wrestled with permits, utilities, and the realities of building around living trees. Then there are supply issues, Ohio ice storms that don’t care about construction (or wedding) dates, and the staffing challenges that come with being a seasonal business tucked away in the valley.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Animal Planet’s Treehouse Masters featured our property with Pete Nelson, which put our little corner of the valley on the map in a big way! Even though our approach stayed the same: build thoughtfully, one project at a time. We’ve quietly welcomed guests from all walks of life, multigenerational families, touring musicians, pro athletes, and even Hollywood stars like Matthew McConaughey have stopped by to sleep in the trees! Couples now fly in from across the U.S. and around the world to get married here because it feels like a true destination, forest ceremony, modern comfort, and an experience their guests talk about for years.

People are often surprised by how we built the venue. The Grand Barn is a timber frame crafted by Amish artisans. We chose honest, readily available materials and then milled only the best local wood for the structural members, no gimmicks, just real old-world joinery and innovative engineering you can feel the moment you walk in. The photos are beautiful, but what sets this place apart is simpler: real craft, real nature, and hospitality we take personally.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
