Hidden Gems: Meet Kayla Vickrey of Skin Care by Kayla Marie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Vickrey. 

Hi Kayla, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a teenager, I grew up in a small town about an hour away from Cleveland and I never knew what an Esthetician was. Around 14 I began to have my own struggles with acne which led me to trying the typical over-the-counter acne treatments that only made my skin dry and irritated. One day my mom took us to the Great Lakes Science Center and in the gift shop, I saw a book on natural skin recipes. This book is what began my skincare journey of at the time creating my own face masks, eventually learning what an Esthetician was and a future Esthetician was born. In 2011 I became licensed and my career began! I had a great mentor and moved back in with my parents to try working at a local spa. My first job ended in a few months, seeing only a couple of clients. I moved to Cleveland and my second job ended terribly within a year. I was learning it’s hard to find a healthy work environment in this career field. I began renting treatment rooms and the next two places were also difficult experiences. While they were painful at the time, I learned so much about how I wanted to run a business and what I did and did not want to do. I finally had a wonderful landlord around year 6 of being an Esthetician who really supported me. Her support and the success I had at her location for 3 years gave me the courage to finally consider finding a permanent space for my business. I had grown and had two wonderful people working for me. In 2019 I purchased our now forever home on Front Street in Berea. We did a complete renovation! This place was beyond needing a renovation with busted pipes, holes in the ceiling, and more. That story could have its own interview! Today my spa offers holistic, results-driven custom facial treatments and sugaring hair removal. We take a more natural approach to skincare, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t results! I am a quieter, calm person and I knew in creating my business that I wanted not just results, but relaxation too! There is no reason we can’t have both. I am passionate about helping women relax, sculpting the face with facial massage, or a facial dance as I like to say growing up as a dancer! I never could have dreamed at 30 years old to be where I am today. I am so grateful for my journey that has led me to the most fulfilling career, and working with such wonderful people by my side. 

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely been a bumpy road to where I am today. A few jobs involved a lot of stress and many tears. One job I was falsely accused of a few things, there was a lot of unprofessionalism and it ended suddenly. I have never come to work for just a paycheck. I learned how much honesty, health, and hard work matter to me.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I am a perfectionist and that has led me to offer treatments how I would want them to be done on myself. I care about quality, being incredibly thorough and professionalism is extremely important to me.
