Hidden Gems: Meet Jermaine Smith of Premier Barber Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jermaine Smith.

Hi Jermaine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started cutting hair when I was 14 years old, taught by my older brother, James Smith Jr. At that time, I never intended to become a barber, and as I grew older, I struggled to find a career path. Eventually, I realized I had a valuable skill: I knew how to cut hair. In August 1998, I enrolled in Lake Erie Barber College.

My wife and I now own three barbershops, starting with Premier Barber Studio, which we opened on September 16, 2000. We expanded to a second location in Ohio City, which opened on December 16, 2019, just before the onset of COVID-19. I have always dreamed of expanding to Berea, Ohio, and when the perfect shop became available, I discussed it with my wife, Roshonda Smith. After some consideration, she agreed. Roshonda understands my passion for this work.

Our goal is to build a legacy for our three children. Tragically, our eldest son, Cortez Smith, recently passed away. Our daughters, Jordan Smith and Hayley Smith, will eventually take over the business. We are dedicated to providing opportunities for the younger generation of barbers who are serious about their profession.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When our first shop opened, I felt very nervous. I had never been in business before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Opening a barbershop requires assembling the perfect team. There are rough moments, such as when you have empty chairs because barbers leave, and you need to find someone to fill their positions. However, it is a blessing to be able to provide opportunities for others.

We specialize in all aspects of hair care. Our shops are clean and professional environments. As a Cleveland police officer, I can assure you that our locations are safe for both services and visits. Each of our shops serves as a safe haven for our clients. I take great pride in the name Premier Barber Studio, as we are committed to providing exceptional service and maintaining high standards of professionalism. We also offer discounts for seniors, first responders, and veterans.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I have two brothers. I’m the middle child. I never thought that I would be a barber or a police officer. I was the one who stayed out past curfew and got bad grades. I’m glad I chose both professions.
