Hidden Gems: Meet Harry Acosta of Harry Acosta Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Harry Acosta.

Hi Harry, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was a marketing art director for 20 years. In that industry, people are laid off often. The positive side of that is, networking is easy since you’ll eventually work with every designer in town. The negative is instability. I had just bought my first professional camera that same month I was released from my last corporate job, so it made sense to switch things up. Utilizing customer service skills from my experience in the restaurant/hospitality industry, tech-minded expertise from corporate-American-cubicle-life, business sensibilities I learned from college, creative solution techniques from the design realm, and camera knowledge from my love for music photography, I started my photography business. So far, it is the best career decision I’ve made.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I had no idea how much of a people person I would have to become when starting my own business. Understanding that people don’t always want to look like themselves also took some time to understand. I have become much better at posing and directing people. That confidence has helped me expand my business.

We’ve been impressed with Harry Acosta Photography, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Clients ask me what I enjoy photographing the most. I’m not bold enough to say that all of my photography tells a story, but I can say, it creates interest. I love capturing the emotions and movement of performances, events, and life as it happens. Having the experience of headshots, real estate, portraits, and event photography allows me to get better at the type of photography I love. Portraits have helped me to get to know my clients so I can understand what I need to focus on. Headshots have helped me hone my editing skills. Real Estate and commercial photography has helped me understand lighting and staging so little to no editing is needed, Event photography has helped me always be ready for anything.

What my clients gain from this is a creative-problem-solving-photographer with the experience to approach any photography needs. They never walk away with a cookie-cutter, boring experience.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
