Today we’d like to introduce you to Diane Steiger.
Hi Diane, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My background is in education, I have an M.Ed. from Ohio State, and I taught math at both Upper Arlington High School and Columbus State. I enjoy working with teenagers, and getting to know them and what makes them special. I discovered the college consulting space when my oldest child started to apply to colleges, and I saw firsthand how complex the admissions landscape had become. Families are flooded with information, yet many lack clear direction. With high school counselors managing large caseloads, many students do not receive the personalized guidance they need. I recognized that I could use my skills and background to guide families through the process in a more strategic and personalized way. So I took courses to develop my skills further, hit the road to tour dozens of colleges across the country, and started my business.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been really fun building my college consulting business. I am a member of a very supportive professional organization called Independent Educational Consultants Association, and I learn a lot from events, conversations, and conferences. I’d say the toughest part has been learning the business side, since I do not have that background. However, it’s been enjoyable to learn about things like media marketing, client management, and even YouTube video production.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am the founder of Matrix College Consulting, where I work one-on-one with high school students and their families to navigate college admissions with clarity and strategy. I specialize in comprehensive college planning, SAT and ACT test strategy, essay coaching, and building balanced and thoughtful college lists. I work with families who want more than surface-level advice. They want a plan.
What sets me apart is that I am both relational and highly strategic. I do not just “talk about colleges.” I build customized roadmaps. Every student I work with has a clear timeline, defined priorities, and a structured plan. I am very data-driven when it comes to admissions trends, testing strategy, and merit aid, but I also care about helping students grow in confidence and ownership throughout the process. Parents are supported, but students learn to advocate for themselves.
Brand-wise, I am most proud that Matrix College Consulting is known for being calm, organized, and honest. Families tell me they feel less overwhelmed and more confident after working together. I am also proud of the content I have built. Through workshops, videos, blog posts, and social media, I aim to make high-quality admissions guidance accessible and practical, not mysterious.
What I want readers to know is this: the college process does not have to feel chaotic. Navigating college admissions can feel overwhelming, and many families are stressed about the process. But with the right strategy, clear priorities, and steady guidance, families can move through it thoughtfully and confidently. My services are designed to provide both structure and support, whether that is through comprehensive packages, strategic planning sessions, or targeted test preparation. My goal is always the same: reduce stress, increase clarity, and help students make decisions that truly fit who they are and where they want to go.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Starting my own business was a risk. I left something predictable to build something from the ground up, without guarantees. There is vulnerability in putting your name on a business and saying, “I believe this adds value.” But I also saw a clear need, and I trusted my skill set, my background in education and my work ethic enough to move forward.
Earlier in my life, I took different kinds of risks. I chose to attend college in Chicago when none of my classmates were going there. That meant leaving what was familiar and stepping into a much bigger environment on my own. I also studied abroad in Australia, which required navigating a new country and a new level of independence. At the time, those decisions felt bold. Looking back, they were defining.
My view on risk is this: the right risks are not impulsive. They are aligned with growth.
In my work with students, I see this play out frequently. Applying to a selective college, raising your hand in class, submitting an essay that feels personal, pursuing a new activity outside your comfort zone, building relationships with teachers or mentors, even choosing a school that is not the “expected” choice. Those are risks too. When taken thoughtfully, they build confidence.
