Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Westling.
Hi Brittany, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started Team b. Strategy + in 2011 as a young woman with a twinkle in my eye, a big idea, and not the faintest idea of how to make it all happen. What I did know was that I wanted to have a career that afforded me the opportunity to contribute to important issues, like national security, while being able to support my spouse in his role as an active-duty service member.
I have extensive experience in the national security space. I am a member of the Armed Forces Communications & Electronics Association Pacific Northwest Chapter and the National Small Business Association. I made a conscious effort to build this company on a foundation of culture and a project portfolio that amplifies our priorities and passions. I was honored to be named a Top Woman Leader for 2023 by Women We Admire. Our firm was nominated by the 2023 DOE Small Business Forum & Expo for best Women-Owned Small Business and was also recognized on the Inc. 5000 list in 2021. Serving as CEO, directly supporting our clients, logging over 100K flight miles over the past year, and participating in the daily operations of my firm – while balancing my roles as military spouse, sister, friend, and dog mom – is truly a joy.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Military spouse business owners face different challenges than other entrepreneurs. As a military spouse, having to move a business every 2-3 years requires a significant amount of documentation and business registration updates. I have balanced day-to-day operations of Team b. through many deployments and operations over the years. Through these challenges, I have continued to carve a successful career path that contributes to national security, supports a completely female leadership team, and seeks opportunities to sustainably grow a virtual firm.
I have a tremendous sense of pride and accomplishment, having assembled a team of incredibly talented people who believed in what I started in 2011 and who continue to roll up their sleeves and bring their best to the table day after day.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I built Team b. Strategy + as a virtual firm and worked to grow and mold the company to have a culture and project portfolio that speaks to who we are as a team and amplify the things we care about.
Team b. continues to expand each year with new team members, clients, and services offerings. As we grow, I remain committed to being a lifestyle company where employees can maintain a healthy work-life balance and clients can count on Team b. to be a partner that is energized and committed to helping them solve their toughest challenges. Team b. takes on growth in a slow and intentional manner – working with clients and partners that value the things we value.
We combine strategic planning and creative ideas to help our clients achieve their goals. We help them define objectives, devise a strategy, and implement their plan. Team b. works shoulder-to-shoulder with our clients to accomplish their goals. We take time to learn our client’s environment, understand their pain points, and bring achievable solutions to the table.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I created a company that is bursting with knowledge and talent, using persistence, hard work, and a stubborn streak. While my years of experience in strategy, communications, marketing, and PR can be described as broad and random, it has given me a Swiss Army Knife toolset that can be utilized in almost any situation.
On the corporate side, I have built Team b. from the ground up. From bookkeeping and legal to recruiting and IT, I have done it all at one point in time or another. Over the years, I have learned enough to know ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’ – and my sense of curiosity leads to creative solutions to complex problems.
