Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Youngblood.
Hi Amy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
As a Communication major in my undergraduate college, I embarked on a career in marketing and sales for several large companies. However, I soon realized that my creative spirit needed to be fully nourished. Driven by a deep-seated passion for interior design, I boldly decided to return to school and pursue my true career dream. After obtaining my design degree, I honed my skills at various design firms, both in the residential and commercial sectors. In 2009, I took a leap of faith, combining my artistic and design skills with my business acumen, and founded Amy Youngblood Interiors. Today, my firm is renowned for its high-end projects, catering to residential and commercial sectors.
Let’s dig deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you overcome?
Well, I’d be lying if I said Interior Design was glamorous. Sure, we get to pick out beautiful things for our clients, and when the final result is gorgeous, it’s worth it. However, there are many challenges and behind-the-scenes tasks in this business. The first challenge when I started my firm was trying to do everything independently. I quickly learned that was a mistake and hired an assistant and a bookkeeper. That way, I could focus on running a growing business and designing. The other thing I learned the hard way was to vet potential clients before taking them on. Unfortunately, not every client is a good fit, and I’ve encountered some difficult ones! After several years in business, I also realized I needed a coach. Hiring a coach is one of the most brilliant things I have done. He has helped me navigate well through what otherwise might be some disastrous situations. One change I made in working with him was to tighten up my contact form on our website by asking key questions to vet potential clients again. Another thing I changed was to charge a design fee upfront. After years of specific clients arguing over bills and tracking my hours, an upfront fee has eliminated too many headaches!
