Hidden Gems: Meet Amy Lahmers of FlourishesConsulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Lahmers.

Hi Amy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up on a family dairy farm near Wooster, Ohio, the oldest of four kids, and from a young age, I was surrounded by people who cared deeply about our community. Neighbors helping neighbors, teachers who stayed late, coaches who saw something in you before you saw it yourself, and pastors pouring into youth and families. Those experiences and my upbringing in Wayne County Ohio shaped my belief that strong communities are built by strong people and strong organizations.

I went to college at Ohio State, was very involved in campus leadership and activities, and discovered I had a real passion for helping people. That led me to pursue my graduate degree in higher education administration at Miami University (Ohio). After graduate school, I came back to Columbus, married my college sweetheart Justin, and have proudly called Central Ohio home ever since. This year we celebrated 26 years of marriage, and we’ve loved raising our family in Hilliard.

For the next two decades, I served in people leadership roles at Ohio State and Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center, and later became executive director for a large multi-site church. It was in that role, when I brought in an HR consultant, that I realized that building teams, developing leaders, and creating healthy workplace cultures, was the work I was most energized by.

That realization led me into consulting, where I built and grew a new region in Ohio for a boutique HR consulting firm. And in 2024, I took a leap of faith and launched FlourishesConsulting, a firm dedicated to helping mission-driven organizations grow stronger from the inside out. Today, our work centers on organizational effectiveness, strategic HR, leadership, and change management, with the goal of helping leaders and their teams move their missions forward with confidence.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Honestly, no — There’ve been many moments that required courage, resilience, and a willingness to embrace uncertainty.

One of the hardest transitions was leaving Ohio State after more than 20 years. It was a place where I had grown so much and walking away from that familiarity wasn’t easy. During that season, I worked with an executive coach who helped me see my strengths more clearly, challenge some of the stories I was telling myself, and recognize new possibilities I hadn’t considered. Her encouragement gave me the confidence to pursue new opportunities.

Then came the decision to start my own business. Leaving a good job with no guarantees is just… a different kind of courage. Entrepreneurship requires you to get comfortable with risk and uncertainty in ways I hadn’t experienced before. I had a genuine passion for the work, but building something from scratch still required a lot of faith, persistence, and honestly, hard days.

As a business owner, one regular challenge is deciding where to focus. Every day presents new opportunities, new ideas, and new demands. Staying grounded in the work that creates the most value for clients is something I’m very intentional about. Fortunately, focus is one of my natural strengths, and it has helped me prioritize what matters most.

Looking back, I am grateful for the people who have shown up for me along the way: my husband and family, mentors, coaches, pastors, colleagues, clients, and now the talented team members who help make FlourishesConsulting what it is. The relationships have been the greatest reward.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about FlourishesConsulting?
FlourishesConsulting provides HR guidance and people strategy to help you build an equipped, aligned team – so you can move your mission forward with confidence.

I chose the name FlourishesConsulting because I love the word “flourish.” It captures both the process and the outcome of growth – to thrive, prosper, develop, and reach one’s fullest potential, even through the hard seasons. It reflects what I believe is possible when people, teams, and organizations are aligned around a shared mission and equipped with the right guidance.

We serve organizations across sectors, growing businesses, nonprofits, faith-based organizations, government entities, and startups, that want to build healthy cultures, strong teams, and more sustainable operations. Our services span strategic HR (including fractional and interim support), organizational effectiveness, leadership coaching, change management, talent acquisition/recruiting, and workshops and training.

What sets us apart is this: we bring both strategic HR expertise and real-world leadership experience. We have sat in the leadership seats our clients are sitting in. We understand the complexity and the pressure. So, we don’t just hand over a report and walk away; we partner alongside our clients to help them implement solutions that work.

We’re also Prosci-certified in change management, which means we help organizations navigate change in a way that brings people along, minimize disruption, and create results that last.

What makes me most proud is the impact our clients achieve. Whether that’s hiring exceptional talent, strengthening team performance, navigating a leadership transition, or simply increasing an organization’s capacity to serve its mission, when our clients flourish, whole communities benefit. That’s what gets me up in the morning.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Servant leadership.

We serve first, and we view our clients’ missions as our own. We approach every client relationship with humility, genuine curiosity, and a real commitment to helping others succeed. It’s about listening carefully, building trust, and offering practical guidance that helps leaders make confident decisions and build teams that perform.

I believe that when leaders lead their people well, organizations thrive. And when organizations thrive, the communities they serve are better for it. That’s the kind of significant impact that matters most to me.
