Today we’d like to introduce you to Tylisha Brantley.
Hi Tylisha, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always been a decisive person with very little doubt. Even as a small child. I knew what I wanted and where I was headed, so my mind was made up by the time I was 7 years old. Becoming a hairstylist was always the plan, but it didn’t come that easy for me. I learned very quickly that you can’t get far without a high school diploma, and becoming a young single mom helped me get nowhere fast. So at 23 years old and a single mom of my two beautiful kids, I went back to school and got my GED. Soon after, I applied for cosmetology school! Unfortunately, I was rejected. Not once, but 3 times, due to my bad credit and poor choices. I couldn’t take no for an answer, so I went to every office and spoke to every person that had the power to give me a chance. I was assertive and stood firm. I would not stop until I got a “yes”, and when I did, I hit the ground running! I obtained my managing Cos license in 2013 as well as my independent contractor’s license. I quickly transitioned into a salon called Next Level Barber and Beauty salon and worked next to the owner Latoya for over 10 years. She has taught me everything I know. There I learned who I wanted to be as a self-employed hairstylist. Although I loved my Next Level family, I felt in my heart it was time to move on and see what I could do on my own. It was the scariest thing I had ever done, but I had to take that leap of faith. Crazy thing about it all…. A tarot card reader told me how everything would play out. I ended up exactly where she said i would at the exact time she said i would be there. Now I am a salon suite owner of Color Me Cre8tiv salon studio located inside Sola Salon. I launched my brand in 2024, and I’m looking forward to celebrating my second year in November! This has been a dream since I was 7, and to see it all come to life has been the biggest blessing.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My biggest challenge was believing in myself the way my clients did. My clients saw potential in me that I couldn’t even see in myself. Leaving a place that you consider “home” and working with people you have considered family or many years was the toughest decision I ever made. Leaving comfort for potential is scary, but I had a lot of support at home from my kids and my husband who have always believed in my crazy ideas.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
the name Color Me Cre8tiv came from the r&b singing group “color me badd”. “Color” meaning “consider”. I’d like people to consider me creative. In all ways, not just with hair. One day my business will be more than hair. But for now, I specialize in making people look good and FEEL like they look good. I have created an environment that makes you feel like we’ve know each other for years. But when you leave, you feel cared for. Locs and all protective styles are my passion but I am continuously a student of what’s trending.
I pride Color Me Cre8tiv on good customer service and making my clients feel like family. We laugh, cry, vent and decompress every time we see each other. I have built my clientele by giving great experiences that make them brag to their friends and coworkers.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I am driven by the ambition that I’ve carried with me since I was 7 years old.
