Exploring Life & Business with Thomas Colosimo of Fieldview Acres Mercantile

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Colosimo

Hi Thomas, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We opened 4 years ago in the historic downtown when a storefront became available. We love traveling and going on vacations. When we travel, we love to explore the towns we are in and the different businesses like souvenir shops, antique stores, artisanal & speciality boutiques and home decor places. We wanted to bring something like that to our town but a combination of everything.

We are a family run business that specializes in buying and selling antiques & collectibles. We are constantly looking for hard to find and unusual items while also selling rustic & farmhouse decor, sounenirs, artisanal products and speciality treats. We even had Robbie Wolfe from the American Pickers visit our store and purchase some of our unique items.

We have a large storefront window display and take great pride in decorating it for the holidays. It has definitely attracted alot of attention and people can’t wait to see what we do next. We love being apart of the community and have been trying to revitalize our downtown. We have several unique events in the downtown like the bike & car show, chili cookoff, Autumn in the Falls, Dicker Days, Late Night in the Falls (1st Friday, every month where businesses stay open late, usually 9pm) and our Tree Lighting Ceremony, Every storefront is full and people are waiting for available spots when they pop up.

We were able to purcase our building and another building in the downtown and have totally renovated them to look more attractive. We are now working on our alleyway by putting up large wrought iron gates and had new concrete poured and stamped to look like stone, We are going to fill it with bistro tables and chair with overhead lighting for all to enjoy and make the downtown even more appealing and attractive.

We are also working on getting our downtown on the National Registry of Historic Place to attract more business to our small quaint community. We hope to be here for many years to come and look forward to seeing what the future holds.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been alot of hard work attracting outside customers to our small town and renovating our buildings but so worth it in the end!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a family run business that specializes in selling hard to find antiques and collectibles, artisanal products, home decor, souvenirs and speciality products. We have been know for buying and selling unusal items like life sized figures, oddities and obscura.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Never give up! Retail is hard. One day you may make fifty dollars while the next day, you may make several thousand. There is no consistency or reason for it. You have to be consistence by being open, keeping your hours posted, finding new items, advertising constantly and eventually they will come.
