Exploring Life & Business with Reid Gavalier of Gavalier Carpentry LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Reid Gavalier

Hi Reid, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My family says they could always tell I had a knack for construction, from the start I gave clues as a kid: always watching or talking to anyone that ever came to do work on our house, watching handy mandy and bob the builder as a kid, and having my own toy workshop full of tools.

The real start of my journey began from my grandfather, He had an amazing talent towards woodworking/carpentry, and he showed me projects he did around his house even at 80 years old redoing his entire kitchen. Right before COVID, at 15 years old, I decided to tackle the project of finishing our basement with my brother. I did the drywall, mudding/taping, baseboard, crown molding, doors, painting, flooring, custom shelving and countertops. By the end of the project my relatives and friends were stunned by the result. I felt that this was my calling. I started doing small jobs around the city for family friends, neighbors, and relatives, and my name just continued to grow.

Towards the end of my sophmore year of highschool, It was time to turn it into a full time company. We now are known across all of NE ohio, often working 45-50 mins away. We do an endless variety of projects: custom cabinetry, decks, built-in shelving systems, stair railings, essentially anything on a home that has to do with wood.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Most business owners in general or especially in my field of work are learning the ways of the business world in their late 30s-40s. I have had to learn the essential knowledge of finances, job price estimation, project software design, accounting, etc, all on top of learning the skill of carpentry itself.

Another struggle beginning my business with my age is walking into a strangers home at 15 years old convincing home-owners to trust me working on their home.

We’ve been impressed with Gavalier Carpentry LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our company provides an extremely rare service for a few reasons. We are not afraid to try modern projects that homeowners randomly see on social media or the internet, Our clients get the benefit of having the owner of the company actually providing the service, instead of many companies owners handing work off to one of their many crews. This allows the homeowner to get the best quality work possible, deal directly with the owner so they know the exact product that they are getting, and all around feel like they are getting a more professional and personal experience.

I want our readers to know that even though we are a younger company, we care so much about our work that we put out that we always outperform our competition that may have been in business much longer than us. We stay up to date with social media and softwares to ease the experience on our customers whether for seeing our work, communicating with us via imessages, recieving invoices/quotes, and even payment methods.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
When you care about the people you work for and the product you put out, the money will come to you, there is no chasing necessary.
