Exploring Life & Business with Michael Easter of SATOO Reptiles and Aquatics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Easter.

Hi Michael, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a young kid, I always had love and respect for reptiles and exotic animals of all kinds, My cousin Tim(co-owner of SATOO) and I would go out and catch all different creepy crawlies and bring them home. I then spent 10 years in Florida working as an animal care taker, educator, researcher, and TV personality. My career started as a volunteer at Everglades Outpost Wildlife Refuge, where I gained a great deal of knowledge and experience. I went on to preform educational demonstrations in the Miami area promoting the conservation and appreciation for all reptiles. I was involved in several research projects as well, my collaborative work is published in several academic journals, including the Journal of Herpetology and Journal of Marine Science and Engineering. I was also featured on the hit show ‘Gator Boys’ and ‘Monster Croc Invasion’. After 10 years in Florida I decided to move back to my hometown and then In April of 2016 my cousin, Tim and I decided to open a shop in Lakewood, OH to bring our passion of reptiles to the Cleveland area. Since 2016 we have had the pleasure of growing our business to a bigger location in Parma OH in which we have several unique reptiles on display like a crocodile, alligator, and a 12ft Burmese python. We are excited to help educate people and help break the stereotype that come with reptiles!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As new entrepreneurs, we had the highs and lows of any new business owners would. Additionally and most notably, when you deal with live animals as your inventory, knowledge and care is of upmost importance. This isn’t always easy to find in regard to employees and the management needed to help things run smoothly. We’ve are very fortunate at the moment, as we have a crew that is extremely knowledgeable, caring, and passionate not only about the business, but the animals that fuel the success of the business, from top to bottom.
