Exploring Life & Business with Marc Carr of MDC Insurance Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marc Carr.

Hi Marc, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Wooster Ohio. My father was a college professor teaching French. Because of this I lived in France and learned French. This also propelled my interests into travel and seeing the world! As a young man I married a woman from Canada. Here I taught French and my wife Linda taught 2nd grade. She and I had our 2 children there and soon discovered an opportunity to teach in Colombia South America. We had a wonderful 5 year stay in Colombia but missed our families in Ohio and Canada. We returned home, but this time to Ohio where I taught French at Mansfield Senior High and Linda taught 2nd grade at Springfield elementary school. We continued to travel to Europe taking students to Paris, London, Rome, Venice, Monte Carlo, and Barcelona. My wife found a new career in grooming dogs and started a new business. She did this for 10 years and then started another business: breeding Australian Labradoodles. I as well began a new business in Life and Health insurance. After 26 years of teaching, I retired . I now continue my insurance business and my wife her Australian Labadoodles.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Teaching had its challenges for both my wife and I. Running a business also has its challenges too. Teaching for example meant dealing with children who sometimes were difficult, distracted, or simply did not want to be in school and learn, but there were some who still wanted to learn and explore the world! In business the challenges present themselves differently: employees who don’t have a strong work ethic, paying for advertising that does not bring business or just not making enough money to cover expenses…

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I primarily help senior citizens with their insurance. This means it focuses on Medicare. From here we look at who are their doctors, medications and so on. We also discuss Life insurance, Trusts and Wills, and occasionally look at investments. I am located in the Barrington One building.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Yes, there are some big changes coming in the Medicare industry. Right now, I’m adjusting to those changes and preparing for what could be a big loss to my agencies income. Right now the industry is fighting with the government to make Medicare plans commissionable, as there are plans that are starting to become non-commissionable. Clients need help from an agent as it is too complicated for them to figure out what is the best plan for them. So as a whole we are still helping our clients but feel that we should still be compensated for the help we give them. I often am asked by a client what do we owe you for your services today? I tell them my consultation and help is free it is the carrier that pays me a commission. They look puzzled as they realize that what we just did took sometimes an hour to 2 hours to figure things out and they feel as if there should have been some kind of compensation given to me for their help. This is what we are fighting to make the federal health insurance program known as CMS understand that there is great value in an agent who helps the beneficiary figure out the best plan for their needs.
