Licia Thompson-Young, CPC, ELI-MP

Hi Licia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Behind the title, tenure, and smile—too many mid-level leaders carry silent personal challenges; providing care for a loved one, grief, divorce, burnout, illness. They’re expected to perform with clarity & excellence as a mid-level leader, professionally, but the weight of personal challenges impacts how they show up at work. I understand this deeply. Two years after college, I entered the insurance industry as a Casualty and Liability adjuster trainee with Safeco, a national insurance company. During my 9 year tenure, I advanced to new hire trainer, Special Investigative Unit and Personal Injury Protection field investigator with skills that sharpened my ability to uncover truth, manage complexity, and guide people through difficult circumstances. That led to 22 years in corporate leadership, advancing from Workers’ Compensation Asst. Claims Manager to National Director of Return to Work, Managed Care and Vendor Relations for Macy’s/ Bloomingdale’s, Inc. then a self-insured, self-administered retailer. The architect of the national return to work program who led large teams, navigated multimillion-dollar processes, cut costs and earned organizational trust, behind the boardroom presence, was an introvert who had survived divorce, empty nesting, caregiving twice and grief—privately recharging while showing up strong in a field where there weren’t many who looked like me. As I reflected on this through the years, I observed many women who came to work stressed or broken, unable to grow forward from their personal challenges which eventually began to impact their ability to perform the essential functions of their job. This is what lead me to pursue coaching certifications to add to the leadership tools I already had and share insight for those in need.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Challenges: Having build a career working for large well established organizations, I didn’t know how to launch a business, nor did I know anyone with a business offering anything similar to what I desired to do. Initially, I invested in programs to learn the marketing and technology I knew would be needed.

During the pandemic, I like everyone else, had lots of time in my home. I chose to buckle down to create and fulfill my personal and professional goals, including writing and publishing a book to coexist with my coaching and consulting firm.

Have I gotten every endeavor right? Absolutely not, however each step forward has allowed me to glean from lessons learned. I live by my belief, “there are no mistakes, only mis-steps which can be course corrected.” Learning requires action even when I didn’t always know what my next step would look or feel like. I learned that each step opens the door to newfound clarity and opportunity to determine what to do next.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I established my firm in 2021, believing very strongly that I’d figure out the things I didn’t know. I trusted myself to pivot when appropriate. The services I have today are not what I offered when I launched. Time and effort, allowed me to reflect. This, along with prayer provided newfound direction with heart-led dedication, clarity and confidence.

I now bring lessons learned through my 22 year corporate leadership career and life, forward as a Leadership Renewal Strategist & published author using my proven R.I.S.E.™ methodology (Renew, Ignite, Soar with Excellence) to equip organizations do what most avoid: address the human behind the title. Through my R.I.S.E.™️workshops and my book, “When Your Soul Whispers”, I equip mid-level leaders to: •Renew with clarity after loss, burnout, divorce, empty nesting • Reconnect with what matters most • Rebuild with passion, purpose, and power • Make bold declarations that drive personal and professional sustainable change.

What sets me apart from others is that I’ve lived every bit of what I now customize to equip others. My brand is designed to speak to decision makers at organizations in ways they can show up caring about their mid-level leaders, as humans trying to grow forward after personal challenges. Not everyone can compartmentalize major life changes by checking them at the proverbial door before entering the workplace. A little humanity can go a long way for an employee who is struggling. No longer is it ok to act as though they’re unseen. A simple question that opens the door to offer resources, begins by asking your leaders “are you ok?” Without getting in to their personal challenge, organizations can bring me in on retainer to build resilient mid level leaders who refocus, stay and grow forward without ending up on a corrective counseling plan, potentially leading to termination.

Options include: individual or small group coaching and consulting. My ideal clients have brought me on-site or virtually for customized experiential workshops and my book. Participants leave with newfound insight and eye opening strategies to grow forward.

Goals include, but aren’t limited to reconnecting with what matters most= renewing resilient mid-level leaders so they show up fully, strengthen retention by cultivating cultures of purpose, passion and power, addressing the human behind the title and responsibilities while making bold declarations that drive sustainable change.

Any big plans?
After two decades of divorce, I got remarried, one year ago, to someone I met in college when I was 18 and he was 19. Miraculously, our paths crossed in an unusual way more than 30 years later. Additionally, I’m a new grandmother. Our blended family is in the process of planning an international vacation together for the first time.
