Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Murphy.

Hi Brian, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Like many great success stories, I found this industry by mistake. But in all seriousness, I fell into this industry and could really see a vision in my mind of building something meaningful. I approached the work with the long term always in mind: continually learn, reinvent, build long enduring relationships, and always look for a better way to do things.

Over a period of 10+ years, I ended up working for 3 of the world’s largest corporations. Through acquisitions and mergers, I felt misaligned in the core values and the original mission. That’s where the idea for Cloud 9 Payments first crystallized.

On a personal level, I’m a firm believer that properly building something from the ground up requires a very specific level of grit and passion. Opening our own shop and doing things in a way that aligned with my inner compass was truly the only next step and way forward. From there, I began to sell the idea and vision to some of my closest allies, friends and professional connections I’d developed over the prior 15 years.

It’s been full steam ahead over the last 2+ years with lots of sacrifices – thousands of hours over late nights, early mornings, and long days. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love what I do and who I do it with.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
From the outside, it always looks like a smooth, easy ride. But to those in the trenches involved in the day-to-day, you know the sacrifices that have gone in. When you get what you don’t want, you get paid in experience and lessons. That can be more valuable than a smooth straight trajectory.

It’s been ever-present growing and evolving individually as a person and as a leader. Entrepreneurship is the only industry where the better you become, the better your company grows. A company will never exceed the level of its leader. It’s something I take personally to try to evolve and grow and bring cutting edges ideas from other more intelligent people to the table. The goal is to build an environment to foster excellence. Navigating and tackling simple to complex problems range from financial, interpersonal, strategy, and ultimately executing. Constantly keeping your eye ahead on potential orange flags and thinking about what’s next, how we can improve and get better across the board.

We attract individuals that are looking to improve their lives and find a culture that supports and encourages it. The biggest challenge has been constantly looking at how we can best utilize the many talented people apart of the team. We have big goals and supporting our people is front and center.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Cloud 9 Payments?
We specialize in software and payments for businesses – from single operator contractors to regional restaurant and retail groups. We’re a boutique ISO (independent sales organization) and we customize everything for our clients. We’ve put the best and brightest together to deliver unlimited upside value to our clients.

As a result of our expertise and care, we become super engrained in our relationships.

We’re the heartbeat of the business as most, if not all, their payments flow through our technology. As a result we touch and interact with so many other crucial areas of their business – IT, Networking, Cabling, Point of Sale, E-commerce Shopping Cart, Marketing, Website, Google, Security, etc. – it’s all related. We’re bringing a modern cutting edge approach, but operating from old school values.

We treat our clients and their staff with respect. We don’t have punitive agreements. We offer cutting edge pricing program to safeguard our clients (we’ve never raised rates). We believe good business and doing good do not have to be mutually exclusive.

We’re known for our high touch, high responsive approach, expert level care, and simple, easy to understand pricing. Simply put, we care. We bring our level of hospitality to every interaction and thoughts.

We get to do this every day and I’m forever grateful.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The #1 thing I’ve learned in business is you can’t do good business with bad people. Simple.

We start there and then from there it’s about resiliency. Grit has become a bit of a buzz word in the personal development world. It’s highly relevant at Cloud 9. Some days are challenging and we continually discuss having the residence and resilience to see projects through. When dealing with technology and people it’s critical to have your foundational pillars in place.

For us at Cloud 9, we have our North Star clearly defined (integrity) and then resilience and toughness (grit) to see it through. Some days, you have to be ok with failing – the key is to just fail forward.
