Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley McKim.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In 2016, we began our journey of beekeeping and wine making. Collaborating the two hobbies, we opened a small storefront from our home. During the next few years, we participated in community events, wine festivals, and educational programs at schools……..which we still do today. We enjoy meeting people, and teaching children how important honey bees are. The life long relationships we’ve built through our business is something we will always cherish.
In 2021, we grew into what would be our first commercial space. We purchased a 3,500 sq foot building with ample parking. For 2 years we renovated the property with full updates, beautiful custom woodwork, a stamped concrete foyer and bar, and a wine cellar with capacity of over 3,000 bottles.
In 2023, we were met with a major setback. One month before opening, a train derailment took place just steps from our front door. It had a major impact on the business. With consumer confidence very low, and loosing our apiaries, we decided to relocate the business.
In 2024, we found a beautiful spot in downtown Columbiana, OH. The new location is surrounded by The Pocket Park and Columbiana Corridor. Definitely a hidden gem, we are tucked away in a very cozy, and intimate setting. Duplicating our first commercial space, we have renovated the new location with custom woodworking, a small pouring bar, and the feel of sitting in a wine cellar as you are surrounded by bottles of our delicious wines. We still have local raw honey from local beekeepers. We also carry gourmet chocolates, which you can grab a complimentary taste of from the candy dish.
Life’s journey is full of ups and downs. We are so grateful for all the support we’ve received through the years, and excited to keep moving forward. Come visit us in downtown Columbiana!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As expected in business, there are ups and downs. Some seasons are busier than others. Ways to market products and events is ever changing. So learning how to target an audience is something we’ve tried to stay on top of.
With us having to deal with an emergency situation, like the train derailment, we’ve learned how to redirect, and be open to change. The most devastating situation is when your whole business is compromised. It’s a very helpless feeling.
But as a whole, we’ve really enjoyed being business owners. The challenges make you stronger. Competition helps you grow. The sky is the limit when you can “Think outside the box.”
We’ve been impressed with McKim’s Honeyvine Winery, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Although we are no longer beekeepers, we do still carry bottled local raw honey, creamed honey, honey sticks, and other honey treats. Our mentor Steve, with Hilltop Honey Farm, is supplying all our honey needs. We’re proud to be carrying his harvests from the hives. Some of our wines are even sweetened with honey.
We are originally from Beaver County, PA. Growing up, we would visit Rosalind Candy Castle with our grandparents. Rosalind’s has been making amazing chocolates for over 100 years, first opening in 1914. Having the winery now as adults, we knew the chocolates would be a hit! Every month we change which chocolates are in the candy dish. You’re welcome to enjoy a complimentary taste as you sip your wine selections.
McKim’s Honeyvine Winery is one of 6 wineries and breweries in Columbiana. Visiting the Firestone, Dutch, and Downtown areas, you can enjoy a glass of wine, or freshly brewed beer anywhere. Our neighboring wineries are Sundog Ciderhouse & Winery, and The Vineyards at Pine Lake. Breweries close by are Brew Lounge Beer Company, Birdfish Brewing, and Ill Will Brewing. The Downtown and Firestone areas include DORA’s (Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area’s), which allow you to enjoy your beverage in public spaces.
Our winery is a member of the Ohio Wines VIP app. Downloading this app gives you access to all the wineries in Ohio. Stamping your passport allows you to earn points, which you can redeem for free merchandise. We absolutely love how the app has connected us to wine lovers who enjoy the thrill of adventure. We’ve met a lot of great people with amazing stories.
We also have gift cards on hand. They are the perfect little gift for that special someone!
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
There’s so many lessons you learn along the way in business. Above all, we believe that face to face interaction with our customers is most important. When you visit the winery you will meet us right away. At events and festivals, we are always there to talk to you. Even when out and about stocking retail store locations, you’ll see us filling product. It’s important to have that interaction. It’s important to know what the consumer is thinking, and what you can do to make their experience better. We believe that is the fundamental building block of small business. Something you won’t get when you walk into a big corporation.
